Connecticut Huskies coach Jim Calhoun announced his retirement before the start of this season. The 70-year-old Hall of Fame coach led the UConn program to three national championships and won enough games to rank him among the 10 winningest coaches in NCAA history. But where exactly does he rank? And who else is on the list? Click ahead and find out.

As if reaching the top of this list weren't enough, Krzyzewski has a remarkable 82-24 record (.774) in NCAA tournament play, 11 Final Four appearances and four national championships. Coach K passed mentor Bobby Knight on this list with a victory over Michigan State on Nov. 15, 2011. He followed in Knight's footsteps by coaching Army for five seasons prior to becoming the King at Duke.

A national championship. A career spanning 37 seasons building a program into one of the nation's best. A .746 winning percentage. Twenty-nine NCAA tournament appearances. What more could a coach want? How about membership into the 900 club? With a 72-68 win over Detroit on Dec. 17, Boeheim did just that, joining Bob Knight and Mike Krzyzewski as the only coaches with 900 career wins. He caught Knight on Dec. 31, 2012 and passed him on Jan. 2.

The combustible, often controversial Knight built his legendary reputation during his 29 seasons as head coach at Indiana. He won 662 games and three national championships as the Hoosiers' coach before finishing his coaching career at Texas Tech.

One of the truly dominant coaches of his era. His Carolina teams reached the Final Four 11 times and won national championships in 1982 and 1993. The list of basketball luminaries that played for Smith includes Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Bob McAdoo, Phil Ford and Bobby Jones.

No one is more responsible for Kentucky's love affair with basketball than the "Baron of the Bluegrass," who led the Wildcats to six Final Fours and four championships in 20 NCAA tournament appearances. However, some of his best teams failed to win the title, including his 1966 team that lost to the all-black starting five of Texas Western in the final, perhaps college basketball's most significant game.

Calhoun is the winner of three NCAA titles, including the 2011 championship, and reached the Final Four four times overall. He served as head coach for 14 seasons at Northeastern before landing at Connecticut in 1986.

Phelan, with his trademark bow tie, spent 49 years as the coach at Maryland's Mount St. Mary's University. His program there became NCAA Division I in 1988. Since he coached at least 10 years in Division I, the NCAA recognizes his career victories in Division II.

Sutton won 71 percent of his games in a 37-year career that included stops at Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma State and San Francisco. Took teams to the Final Four in three different decades (Arkansas in 1978 and Oklahoma State in 1995 and 2004.
