CBK 99 88 Studs and Duds from the national title game 11107624 Stud: Kyle Singler, Duke Stud%3A+Kyle+Singler%2C+Duke CBK With Nolan Smith and Jon Scheyer struggling from the perimeter on Monday night in Indianapolis, the Blue Devils' junior forward rose to the occasion, taking over down the stretch with a game-high 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting — including a 3-for-6 performance from beyond the arc — to go along with nine rebounds and two blocks. But just as important as Singler's offense was his defense on Butler star Gordon Hayward, who was limited to 12 points on 2-for-11 shooting.

CBK 99 88 Studs and Duds from the national title game 11107628 Dud: Gordon Hayward, Butler Dud%3A+Gordon+Hayward%2C+Butler CBK One of the brightest young stars in this year's NCAA tournament, Hayward carried Butler into Monday night's national championship game with his offensive and defensive prowess. But Duke locked down on the sophomore forward and made it hard for him to get good looks at the basket when a title was on the line. It resulted in a 2-for-11 outing from the perimeter and just 12 points from Hayward, who still almost won the Bulldogs a title with his half-court heave at the buzzer that just missed the bottom of the net. Despite the poor shooting performance, he did make all eight of his free throws and grabbed eight rebounds.

CBK 99 88 Studs and Duds from the national title game 11107725 Stud: Brian Zoubek, Duke Stud%3A+Brian+Zoubek%2C+Duke CBK The big man from New Jersey has dealt with his fair share of injuries over his four-year career in Durham, but he proved to be the difference down the stretch in the Blue Devils' title run. And on Monday night against Butler, he provided once again that much-needed punch down low for Mike Krzyzewski's team. Zoubek may have only scored eight points in his 31 minutes of floor time, but he pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, including six on the offensive end, blocked two shots and stepped out to contest Gordon Hayward's fadeaway jumper with the game on the line in the closing seconds.

CBK 99 88 Studs and Duds from the national title game 11107623 Dud: Matt Howard, Butler Dud%3A+Matt+Howard%2C+Butler CBK The junior forward had to stay out of foul trouble for the Bulldogs to have a shot at winning the national title on Monday night. But Howard couldn't avoid picking up his second personal before halftime, sending him to the bench at the 8:33 mark in the first half. Howard would contribute some big baskets down the stretch, but he only managed to play a total of 19 minutes in the heartbreaking loss to Duke, finishing with 11 points and four rebounds.

CBK 99 88 Studs and Duds from the national title game 11107627 Stud: Avery Jukes, Butler Stud%3A+Avery+Jukes%2C+Butler CBK The Bulldogs needed a third scorer to step up against Duke if they wanted to have a shot at cutting down the nets in their hometown of Indianapolis on Monday night, and that's exactly what they got from Jukes. The senior reserve forward lifted his game early on against the Blue Devils, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to keep Butler within striking distance of the ACC champs. Despite doing most of his damage in the first half, Jukes finished with 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting while also collecting four rebounds in his 18 minutes.

CBK 99 88 Studs and Duds from the national title game 11107626 Dud: Nolan Smith, Duke Dud%3A+Nolan+Smith%2C+Duke CBK After an impressive regular-season performance, Smith came into Monday night's national championship with strong efforts against Baylor and West Virginia in Duke's previous two NCAA tournament games. But the junior guard didn't have that same kind of shooting touch against Butler, making only five of his 15 field-goal attempts and just one of his five three-point attempts. While the 6-foot-2 Smith ended up with just 13 points after playing all 40 minutes in the title win, he also managed to commit three turnovers against a pesky Bulldog defense.

CBK 99 88 Studs and Duds from the national title game 11107749 Stud: Shelvin Mack, Butler Stud%3A+Shelvin+Mack%2C+Butler CBK Beside Gordon Hayward, Mack has stepped up as the Bulldogs' other primary scorer this season. And the sophomore guard did his best to keep Butler close early on, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers in the first half to answer Duke's own scoring attack. Though he did most of his offensive work before halftime, Mack overcame an injured wrist to finish with five rebounds, two assists and two steals in addition to his 12 points in 31 minutes of action.

CBK 99 88 Studs and Duds from the national title game 11107625 Dud: Willie Veasley, Butler Dud%3A+Willie+Veasley%2C+Butler CBK Veasley is known more for his defensive ability than his scoring capabilities, but on Monday night against ACC power Duke, he couldn't buy a bucket. The senior guard-forward misfired on all five of his three-point attempts, finishing with a 1-for-9 shooting effort from the field and scoring just two points in his 38 minutes. While he did collect three rebounds and three assists, he also had two turnovers and struggled to contain Duke star Kyle Singler — who went for a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds to be named the Final Four's most outstanding player.
