Trailing by 18 points with 7:12 remaining, the Sacramento State women went on a 16-3 run over the next six minutes to pull within five before falling to visiting Fresno State 74-68 on Sunday. After trailing by as many as 22 in the second half, the Hornets' late surge narrowed the Fresno State lead to 69-64. "We found a rhythm offensively early in the second half, and then our defensive rotations picked up to where we were getting scores on offense and stops on defense every trip," Hornets coach Dan Muscatell said. "There are no moral victories. However, this team showed toughness, fight and grit late in the second half for the third time in four games." Sac State's Charday Hunt led all scorers with a career-high 25 points. Hunt, a junior, also posted had a career-high five assists. Senior Atty Boyer posted her first double double of the season for the Hornets (1-3), scoring 12 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior Erika Edwards continued her hot shooting from beyond the three-point arc, going 3 of 5 en route to 11 points. Edwards also had eight rebounds. Fresno State (3-0), the reigning Western Athletic Conference champions, led 41-23 at halftime. Jalessa Ross led the Bulldogs with 19 points. No. 8 Stanford 81, No. 3 Rutgers 47 in Stanford -- Jayne Appel had 19 points and 14 rebounds as the Cardinal (3-1) beat the Scarlet Knights (2-2). Stanford lost junior point guard JJ Hones to a left knee injury with three minutes left in the first half. Her knee gave out while she was trying to plant for a shot and she fell in a heap in obvious pain. Hones suffered a season-ending torn ACL in the same knee two years ago. She will undergo an MRI today. "It's upsetting to see a player go down like that," said Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer. "I can't explain the epidemic of knee injuries in women's basketball because we all do everything we can to prevent it." Hones missed the first two games of the season because of a minor injury. She made 3 of 4 three-point attempts and recorded a game-high six assists before being helped into the locker room. Kayla Pedersen had 17 points for the Cardinal, which won its fourth consecutive game over the Scarlet Knights. Nnemkadi Ogwumike scored 11 points. Stanford lost at No. 10 Baylor a week ago. "After last week we put things in perspective," Ogwumike said. "We dug in deep and started working harder." Nevada 99, Saint Mary's 91 in Reno -- Brandi Jones and Johnna Ward each scored 17 points to lead the Wolfpack (2-3) over the Gaels (0-5). Men Saint Mary's 86, Vanguard 54 in Moraga -- Patty Mills scored 16 points as the Gaels (3-0) beat the NAIA Lions (1-4). The Associated Press contributed to this report.
