Bears get needed breather

Jacksonville University, Cal's opponent Tuesday night, is not the school that Artis Gilmore led to the NCAA Championship Game in 1970. That was Jacksonville State. Gilmore is currently 60 years old, and the fact that he could have helped the Dolphins was a welcome relief for a Cal team reeling off two losses against ranked teams in New York. The Bears 3-2 went on an early 14-2 run and, from that point on, the 79-47 win at Berkeley's Haas Pavilion resembled a sloppy practice, complete with shooting and layup drills. Cal can shoot, as Patrick Christopher and Jerome Randle combined to go 14-for-20 from the field for 33 points. And it had 20 fast-break points to zero for Jacksonville. The Dolphins 0-2 shot 28 percent. More importantly, they did not play a zone defense and blocked just one shot - after the Bears were harassed and swatted 20 times in losses to Syracuse and Ohio State. "Coming out of New York, we were wounded and I wanted them to play hard," said Cal coach Mike Montgomery, who was animated enough on the sideline that he gave Randle a hard slap on the butt at one point. "I was trying to get them fired up, and they played hard defensively." Christopher was particularly aggressive, scoring 23 points and lifting four steals. He actually missed two three-pointers in the first minute of the game and then made nine of his next 12 shots, including all four three-pointers. "It was good for us to get our bounce back," Christopher said. Reserve Omondi Amoke again came up big, and had a career-high 15 points to go with eight rebounds. Playing mostly power forward, the 6-foot-7 Amoke had 15 rebounds in the loss to Ohio State and leads Cal with 7.4 per game this season. "We call him O-board," Christopher said. "He has been a great spark and has a real nose for the ball." Randle had 10 points in 22 minutes. He ran into a pick and limped off, but is fine. The Bears didn't do much inside, as starting center Markhuri Sanders-Frison was 1 of 2 for two points and 7-foot-3 backup Max Zhang - often matched against 6-7 Will Alston - was 1-for-5 for two points. Briefly: Montgomery had this to say when asked about Theo Robertson's foot he missed his third straight game with a stress reaction: "Theo's foot is still attached. We have not amputated it. There is nothing structurally wrong with it. He is still in pain." ... Cal hosts Princeton 2-1 Sunday.
