Cal basketball notebook: Senior Theo Robertson will return for Wednesday's game vs. Pacific after mi

The Cal basketball team expects to welcome back senior Theo Robertson tonight at Pacific, and the Golden Bears are thrilled. "It should change things drastically," coach Mike Montgomery said. "It definitely improves us," point guard Jerome Randle said. "He came back (to practice Monday) like he was never gone. He was making shots and getting up and down the floor. Everyone's excited." The Golden Bears (5-3), who take on the Tigers (6-1) in a 7 p.m. tipoff at the Stockton Arena, have played the past six games without Robertson. The 6-foot-6 small forward from De La Salle High averaged 18 points in Cal's first two games, then suffered a right foot injury just before the club trekked to New York to face Syracuse and Ohio State. "It might be a little harder to guard us now," Randle said. "With Patrick (Christopher) and me and Theo out there shooting the ball or creating for each other, it'll make it really difficult. ... They'll have to defend everybody." Robertson averaged 13.1 points a year ago and ranked second in the Pac-10 in 3-point accuracy at 48.7 percent. "We could have really used him against those zones in New York, having a third pure shooter," Montgomery said. "I would think it will be much harder loading up on Patrick and Jerome." Montgomery said junior center Markhuri Sanders-Frison is feeling stronger after a bout with the flu that forced him to sit out one game and limited his minutes in the past two. "He was really sick. It's taken him some time to get his stamina back," Montgomery said. "We need Markhuri to get his conditioning back and get in shape. He's a good teammate. He defends well, he talks." No indication from Montgomery whether Sanders-Frison or Max Zhang will start against the Tigers. Zhang, who started the past three games, is encouraged by his progress but also amused at the fuss made over his play Saturday against Iowa State star Craig Brackins. "It was a great opportunity for me. I probably never played defense on such a great player for such a long period of time," he said. "I tried different things in the game, and I think some of them worked really well. "Here's the thing I think is really funny: He scored 21 points and after the game everybody who sees me said, 'Hey Max, you did a great defensive job on him.' I guess sometimes I changed his shots, but he's just good." With close to 7,500 seats sold, it will be Pacific's largest home crowd ever.
