Charleston Southern Getting Inside

Not only did Charleston Southern go through its third consecutive season with 10 or fewer victories last year, but the Bucs suffered the ultimate indignity in the Big South Conference by missing the eight-team league tournament.

The season was pockmarked with adversity. There were serious injuries to Billy Blackmon and Kelvin Martin. The team's best player, Omar Carter, didn't always play focused and ultimately chose to transfer to a junior college.

Fifth-year coach Barclay Radebaugh was forced to use a seven-player rotation by the end of the season, and the Bucs couldn't sneak past High Point to earn the final league tournament bid.

To top it off, Charleston Southern had a 27-point lead at Winthrop late in the season but blew it. It was a game the epitomized the Bucs' season.

"It was one of the toughest things in my 20 years of college coaching," Radebaugh said. "It was really a hard experience. I thought at the beginning of the year that we would have a quality team. Just a number of factors prevented that."

The Bucs prepared for last season by taking an overseas preseason trip to Poland, and the improved chemistry seemed evident, as they started the season by winning five of eight games.

But as the injuries and tension mounted, Charleston Southern crumbled, and the Bucs went 4-17 in their final 21 games.

Charleston Southern was picked to finish ninth in the Big South by the league's coaches and media, understandable considering the Bucs' lack of success in recent years.

The Bucs are 10-36 in league games in its last three seasons, and the loss of Carter's production will certainly hurt. But Radebaugh is excited to see how a young team full of some of the better recruits Charleston Southern has signed can perform.
