Charlotte is looking more and more like a team ready to be a surprise contender in the Atlantic 10 this season.

The 49ers were 11-20 last season, their worst record in Bobby Lutz's 12 seasons as coach. However, they have turned things around this season by going 5-1 for their best start since 2000-01.

The addition of junior forward Shamari Spears has made a major impact as he transferred from Boston College in order to be closer to his native Salisbury, N.C. He has averaged 21.8 points and 5.2 rebounds a game, providing a strong inside presence.

Senior point guard DiJuan Harris has responded to Lutz's challenge of bringing in freshman Derrio Green to challenge him for playing time. Harris is averaging 10.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a game. Meanwhile, Green is contributing as a combination guard and has an 8.3 scoring average.

The one aspect of Charlotte's start that does temper some enthusiasm, though, is the 49ers weren't competitive in their only loss, getting blown out 101-59 at Duke on Nov. 17. Then again, there isn't anybody in the Atlantic 10 who plays quite at Duke's level.
