Coach's lawsuit names Tubby

Former Oklahoma State assistant basketball coach Jimmy Williams has sued Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith for more than $50,000. Williams said he quit his job at OSU to work with Smith, only to be denied the job later, according to a report in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. It is the second lawsuit Jimmy Williams has filed in the case. The other, filed against the University of Minnesota, alleges "negligent misrepresentation" against the school. Williams, who was coaching at OSU in 2007, quit with one year left on his contract to join Smith's staff in a $200,000 per year job, the suit claims. However, Williams' hire was denied by Minnesota athletic director Joe Maturi in April 2007, he claims. Williams previously coached at Minnesota in the 1970s. He also served as the Gophers' interim head coach during the 1985-86 season. During that time frame, the school was accused of committing NCAA violations. "Between March 30, 2007, and April 2, 2007, Smith did not disclose to Williams that his authority to hire him was anything but complete and final," the lawsuit said, according to the Star Tribune. The lawsuit claims Smith told Williams that he was the right person for the job. "I think we'd be a great team together," the suit said Smith told Williams. "I am really offering you the job, and I can get you the money that you wanted." It accuses Smith of "false representations of authority." Lawyers for Smith and Williams weren't available for comment Thursday, the Star Tribune reported. Williams, a native of Havana, Fla., began his coaching career in 1969-70 as the junior varsity coach at Ashland University, his alma mater. Williams spent time early this decade in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors. Williams was an assistant for one season in Stillwater under former coach Sean Sutton.
