College Basketball: Tar Heels' Williams gets his 600th victory

Deon Thompson scored a career-high 23 points as No. 11 North Carolina beat pesky Nevada, 80-73, in Chapel Hill, N.C., last night to give coach Roy Williams his 600th career victory. The Tar Heels (6-1) endured an uncharacteristic second-half slump, warmed up down the stretch with an 11-3 spurt, and hit 4 of 7 free throws in the final minute to dodge Nevada's upset bid. Armon Johnson scored 20 points and Luke Babbitt added 13 to lead the Wolf Pack (2-3). Nevada shot 41 percent and held the Tar Heels without a field goal for five minutes before missing 10 of their final 14 shots. That was enough to make Williams the 33d coach in Division I history to reach the 600-victory mark. Williams, who spent 15 years at Kansas before taking over at his alma mater in 2003, improved to 600-139 in his 22d season. Alabama 68, Michigan 66 - JaMychal Green scored 20 points, including a go-ahead dunk with five seconds left to play, as the Crimson Tide (4-2) beat the No. 15 Wolverines (3-2) at the Old Spice Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. In other games, Solomon Alabi hit a baseline jumper with 11.9 seconds left as Florida State (6-1) rallied to take a tournament-winning, 57-56 victory over Marquette (6-1); Kyle Smyth scored 14 points to give Iona (4-2) a 63-55 win over Creighton (2-4); and Tweety Carter had 27 points, including six three-pointers, in a 69-64 win for Baylor (6-1) over Xavier (4-2). Clemson 70, Butler 69 - Demontez Stitt made two free throws with 3.3 seconds remaining to give the No. 19 Tigers (6-1) a victory over the No. 12 Bulldogs (4-2) in the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif. Also in the 76 Classic, Derrick Roland scored 19 points in a 66-65 win for Texas A&M (5-1) over No. 22 Minnesota (4-2). Also, T.J. Robinson had 25 points and added 13 rebounds to lead Long Beach State to its first-ever victory over UCLA with a 79-68 win. Washington 63, Montana 59 - Venoy Overton blocked a three-point attempt by Anthony Johnson with seven seconds left to help the No. 14 Huskies (5-0) escape with a win over the Grizzlies (4-2) in Seattle. Texas 77, Rice 59 -Dexter Pittman scored 21 points and the third-ranked Longhorns (5-0) held off a rally by the Owls (4-2) before pulling away for a victory in Houston. Elsewhere: Maurice Joseph scored 21 points, including hitting five three-pointers, to lead Vermont to an 82-49 rout of Toledo in the Legends Classic at Drexel's Daskalakis Athletic Center. . . . Tracy Smith had 20 points to help North Carolina State to a 69-52 victory over New Orleans in Raleigh, N.C. . . . Darryl Roberts scored 15 points to lead five players in double figures as host Akron pinned an 80-68 loss on Niagara . Remy Cousart scored 18 points as Ursinus won its home opener with an 82-56 victory over Lebanon Valley in Collegeville. . . . Jamal Boykin and Jerome Randle each scored 22 as California cruised to an 81-60 win over Princeton in Berkeley, Calif. . . . Jeremy Lin scored 19 points as Harvard rallied to a 78-70 win over Boston University .
