College Basketball: Kansas, Kentucky fall
James Anderson scored 27 points, Keiton Page was perfect on four three-point tries at crucial times, and Oklahoma State denied a bid by No. 1 Kansas to go undefeated through Big Twelve play with an 85-77 victory yesterday in Stillwater, Okla.
The Jayhawks (27-2, 13-1) had won their last 13 games since losing at Tennessee to close nonconference play and suffered their second loss of the season just hours after No. 2 Kentucky also lost to the Volunteers.
The last time the top two teams lost on the same day was Jan. 21, 2006, when No. 1 Duke lost to Georgetown and No. 2 Florida lost to Tennessee.
Students stormed the court after Oklahoma State (20-8, 8-6) moved to 3-1 against top-ranked teams all-time at home and likely removed any doubt as to whether it would make the NCAA tournament for a second straight season. Despite entering the game in seventh place in the Big Twelve, the Cowboys had an RPI of 33.
Tennessee 74, Kentucky 65 - J.P. Prince had 20 points, Scotty Hopson added 15, and the No. 19 Vols snapped the No. 2 Wildcats' eight-game winning streak with an upset in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Wildcats (27-2, 12-2 Southeastern Conference) had trailed by 16 midway through the first half but managed to tie the game at 65 before Prince and Hopson scored the final nine points to clinch the victory for Tennessee (21-7, 9-5).
Kentucky's freshman stars had solid games once again, with John Wall getting 19 points and DeMarcus Cousins adding 15 and a game-high 14 rebounds.
However, the Wildcats made just two of 22 three-point attempts and shot a season-low 35 percent overall.
Notre Dame 78, Georgetown 64 - Ben Hansbrough scored 21 points, Tim Abromaitis had 19, and the Fighting Irish thrust themselves back into the NCAA tournament picture with a win over the No. 11 Hoyas (19-8, 9-7 Big East) in Washington. It was their second straight win over a Top 25 team.
The Hoyas' loss sealed a double bye for Villanova in the Big East tournament. Even if the Wildcats lose their last two games and either Marquette or Louisville manages to match the resulting 12-6 conference record, Villanova holds the tiebreaker. The Wildcats have beaten the Cardinals once and the Golden Eagles twice.
The Irish (19-10, 8-8) have looked like a Big East contender the last two games without leading scorer Luke Harangody, who missed his fourth straight game with a bone bruise on his right knee.
Kansas State 63, Missouri 53 Curtis Kelly had a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds), Jamar Samuels scored 14 points, and the No. 6 Wildcats overcame an ugly first 15 minutes to pull out a defense-dominated win over the Tigers in Manhattan, Kan.
Kansas State (24-4, 11-3 Big Twelve) buckled under Missouri's (21-8, 9-5) pressure early, putting together its worst shooting half in 14 years (18 percent). Then they used solid defense to shake the funk, mounting a 13-4 run early in the second half.
West Virginia 74, Cincinnati 68 - Kevin Jones scored 10 of his 15 points in the second half, and the No. 8 Mountaineers (22-6, 11-5 Big East) came from 13 points down to beat the Bearcats (16-12, 7-9) in Morgantown, W.Va.
West Virginia can earn a bye in the first two rounds of the conference tournament with a win over Georgetown tomorrow night.
Ohio State 66, Michigan 55 - William Buford scored 24 points and Evan Turner added 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the No. 9 Buckeyes (23-7, 13-4 Big Ten) over the Wolverines (13-15, 6-10) in Columbus, Ohio.
The victory kept the Buckeyes in the thick of the Big Ten race heading into the final week. It also gave them a measure of retribution for an earlier loss to the Wolverines.
New Mexico 83, BYU 81 - Dairese Gary scored 23 points and Darington Hobson blocked a last-second shot as the No. 10 Lobos (27-3, 13-2) edged the No. 13 Cougars (26-4, 11-3) in Provo, Utah.
New Mexico clinched the top seed in the Mountain West tournament and a share of the regular-season title.
Pittsburgh 71, St. John's 64 - Nasir Robinson scored 13 points, including Pittsburgh's first nine of the second half, and the 12th-ranked Panthers (22-7, 11-5 Big East) beat the Red Storm (15-13, 5-11) in New York.
Elsewhere: Jeffrey Taylor scored 18 points and A.J. Ogilvy added 14 to lead No. 16 Vanderbilt to an 89-72 win over Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. . . . Elias Harris scored 17 points, and No. 18 Gonzaga held off San Francisco, 75-69, in Spokane, Wash., to win its 10th straight West Coast Conference title. . . . Donald Sloan scored 19 points to lead No. 22 Texas A&M, 74-58, over No. 21 Texas at home in College Station, Texas.
Ekpe Udoh had 20 points and seven blocked shots playing in his home state, and No. 24 Baylor beat Oklahoma, 70-63, for its first win over the Sooners in Norman, Okla., since December 1977. . . . No. 25 Northern Iowa beat Illinois State, 61-55, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, to complete its first unbeaten season at home in 46 years. . . . Mike Rosario scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half to lead Rutgers to a 71-62 comeback win over DePaul in Piscataway, N.J.
Ralph Hegamin scored 21 points for host West Chester in a season-ending 88-74 loss to East Stroudsburg. . . . Adewale Adefemi scored a caeer-high 28 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for host University of Sciences in a 77-74 loss to Post.
Sharif Bray scored 22 points as host Cheyney fell, 73-71, to Shippensburg. . . . Justin Swidowski scored 22 points for host Holy Family in a season-ending 72-60 loss to Felician. . . . Ryan Cook scored 13 points for host Chestnut Hill College in a 56-55 loss to Wilmington University.
