College Basketball: No. 2 Kansas defeats No. 5 Kansas State

Sherron Collins had 17 points in his final game at Allen Fieldhouse as No. 2 Kansas beat No. 5 Kansas State, 82-65, last night in Lawrence to clinch its sixth straight Big Twelve regular-season title outright.

Xavier Henry scored 15 of his 19 points in a tight first half and Kansas (28-2, 14-1) wore down Kansas State in a foul-filled game to extend the nation's longest home winning streak to 59 games.

Prep Charter graduate Markieff Morris added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Kansas State (24-5, 11-4) relied on the guard combination of Jacob Pullen and Denis Clemente to keep it close while its front line struggled with foul trouble. Clemente had 21 points and Pullen 20.

One would have to flip the calendar back to 1958 to find a Sunflower game that meant this much. That was the last time these teams played with both ranked in the top five, a game in which No. 4 Kansas State and coach Tex Winter took down Wilt Chamberlain and the second-ranked Jayhawks, 79-75.

Kentucky 80, Georgia 68 - John Wall had 24 points as No. 3 Kentucky clinched at least a share of the Southeastern Conference regular-season title by beating the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga.

Patrick Patterson added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (28-2, 13-2), who scored the first 12 points of the second half.

Kentucky, which won a share of its 44th SEC title, snapped a streak of four consecutive home victories for Georgia (13-15, 5-10).

Maryland 79, Duke 72 - Greivis Vasquez scored 20 points, including a key basket with 37 seconds left, as the No. 22 Terrapins beat No. 4 Duke to move into a tie with the Blue Devils atop the ACC standings.

Jordan Williams had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Terrapins (22-7, 12-3), who have won six straight since losing by 21 at Duke (25-5, 12-3) on Feb. 13.

Purdue 74, Indiana 55 - E'Twaun Moore scored 21 points and Chris Kramer added a season-high 18 in his final home game to help the No. 7 Boilermakers (25-4, 13-4 Big Ten) beat Indiana (9-20, 3-14) in West Lafayette, Ind.

If Purdue wins at Penn State on Saturday, the Boilermakers will earn a share of the Big Ten championship.

"A lot of people didn't think we'd ever be in this position when we came in as freshmen," Purdue senior Keaton Grant said.

New Mexico 73, Texas Christian 66 - Darington Hobson had 20 points and 14 rebounds while Roman Martinez added 19 points in his final game at the Pit in Albuquerque as New Mexico beat TCU to secure the Lobos' first outright conference title in 16 years.

The Lobos (28-3, 14-2 Mountain West) won their 14th straight game. New Mexico also tied a school record for wins - matching a 28-5 mark from 1995-96.

TCU is 13-17 and 5-10.

Elsewhere: Jon Leuer scored 18 points as No. 15 Wisconsin celebrated Senior Night by beating Iowa, 67-40, at home in Madison. . . . No. 16 Tennessee shot 54.5 percent for the game in posting a 80-73 win over Arkansas at home in Knoxville. . . . No. 25 Xavier handed Fordham its 20th loss in row, winning by 82-56 in New York. . . . No. 14 Brigham Young posted a 71-51 win over Utah in Salt Lake City.

Tory Jackson had 20 second-half points as Notre Dame bolstered its chances for an NCAA bid with a 58-50 win over Connecticut in South Bend, Ind. . . . Playing its last game ever at the 42-year-old Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum, Auburn topped Mississippi State, 89-80. . . . Michael Snaer scored 14 points, including two game-clinching free throws with four seconds left, to lead Florida State to a 51-47 home win over Wake Forest.

It was Boston College 68, Virginia 55 in Boston as the Cavaliers suffered their eighth loss in a row. . . . Dorenzo Hudson and Malcolm Delaney each scored 21 points to help Virginia Tech snap a three-game skid with a 71-59 home win over North Carolina State.

Keith Cothran scored 18 points and Rhode Island held Charlotte scoreless for more than seven minutes in posting a 80-58 Atlantic Ten win in Kingston, R.I. . . . Chris Matthews and Andrew Nicholson scored 21 points each to lead St. Bonaventure to its fourth straight win, 92-80, over Duquesne in Olean, N.Y.

Patriot League tournament: CJ McCollum scored 19 points and Masterman graduate Zahir Carrington added 12 to lead top-seeded Lehigh by Army, 64-45, in a quarterfinal in Bethlehem, Pa.

In other games, Holy Cross beat Bucknell, 67-64; Lafayette beat Colgate, 73-65; and American edged Navy, 62-60. The semifinals will be Sunday.
