SCOUTING THE NEWCOMERS: Mitchell needs Kareem Brown and Quinston Reggins to step into the lineup right away. Brown, Reggins and freshman George Jackson all could take a hand in replacing the statistical contributions made by McKee. Jackson played his high-school ball for Digital Harbor, a highly-touted program in the Baltimore area. Freshman forward Jonathan Landry joins the program from San Antonio. Landry's a natural small forward but also can play the four spot. Brandon Doughty went to school at Coppin State last year, but joins the team this season and has four years of eligibility.

KEY EARLY-SEASON GAMES: The Eagles face a rugged early schedule, with trips to Colorado on Nov. 16, and Southern California on Nov. 27. Then Coppin opens its conference schedule against Morgan State, the two-time regular-season champion. Games at West Virginia, Michigan and Oklahoma State await in December and January.

PROGRAM DIRECTION: It's tough to see Coppin State challenging for the MEAC title, especially with no seniors and the chore of replacing McKee. But remember, two years ago, the Eagles scuffled through the regular season and then made a run through the league tournament to earn a trip to the Big Dance. Coppin State will be an underdog again this year, but don't ever count out a team coached by Mitchell.

PROBABLE STARTING LINEUP: PG Quinston Reggins, G Vince Goldsberry, G Michael Harper, F Eddie Hayden, C Sam Coleman.

ROSTER REPORT:

--Coach Fang Mitchell continues to emphasize the Baltimore area in his recruiting. George Jackson hails from Baltimore and Brandon Doughty from Upper Marlboro, Md., about an hour away. "The more of them that we can get, especially the big-name players from Baltimore, the better it will be for us. I've always looked to try to get as many Baltimore players I can get because it's definitely a quality area," Mitchell said.

--Kareem Brown played at the same junior college, Monroe Community College, as Tyvon Williams -- one of the new additions at MEAC opponent South Carolina State.
