Feeling at home

GRAND RAPIDS -- Jeanette Woodberry and Angel Chan are at different junctures of their post-college basketball careers, but they can agree on one thing. It's good to come home. Woodberry and Chan were named most valuable players of their respective teams Wednesday in the Champions of Character All-Star game at Cornerstone University. Woodberry, who starred for two years at Davenport University, led a balanced Meijer attack with 21 points as Meijer defeated the WBBL All-Stars 84-63 in the first of two games. It was a triumphant return for Woodberry, who averaged close to 21 points in her first season (2006-07) and 20 points the next season at Davenport. She followed that up this season with an average of 20 points per game for CS Renes Binnenland Dames 1, one of the top women's teams in the Netherlands. "It was a lot of fun to come back here," Woodberry said. "At first, I was nervous because I didn't know what their style of basketball (pro team's) would be like. I wondered if it would be more physical or more of a finesse game like I'm used to playing." Woodberry, 23, said there were players as young as 16 on the roster of her pro team, which included players from Poland, Italy, Norway and Africa. While awaiting her second pro season, Woodberry is getting her business off the ground, Woodball Training (woodballtraining.com), which provides general workouts to improve players' individual skills, among other services. "I'd like to help young women get better at basketball. I like teaching and watching girls play the game," said Woodberry, who said she will play in Switzerland her second pro season. Chan is weighing offers from different agents and overseas teams after a strong finish to her four-year basketball career at Central Michigan University. Chan scored 24 points, including four 3-pointers, for the WBBL team. The former Godwin Heights and Wyoming Park star capped her college career by taking part in a 3-point shootout during Final Four festivities in Detroit. "I worked so hard for that competition and I got to the last rack and I just missed all the shots," Chan said. Chan just returned from a trip to Austria with other players, and her team took first place in the tournament it entered. That attracted the attention of agents and teams. Until her next basketball stop, it was time for Chan to return home and take a break. "It feels good just being home and seeing the crowd and girls like Kendra Gallert (Eastern Michigan) and April Kidd (Oakland)," she said. Kidd scored 20 points and Kim Wyngaard (Grand Valley State) added 19 points for the Meijer team. Gallert scored 12 points for WBBL. Sara Haverdink (Davenport) scored 11 points and Latisha Luckett added 10.
