Flyers women fall in final minute to Louisville

Dayton - Louisville's final shot fell. Dayton's didn't. That was the difference Sunday, Nov. 15, between the University of Dayton enjoying the best weekend in its women's basketball history and not. Louisville, last year's NCAA runner-up and currently ranked No. 19 in the country, came from seven points down in the closing minutes for a 65-63 win before 1,197 fans at UD Arena. Becky Burke's 3-point shot with 27 seconds remaining gave the 1-0 Cardinals a 64-63 lead. Dayton ran the clock down to 18 seconds before calling time out to set up a final shot. Although it wasn't the play called in the huddle, UD's Kendel Ross found herself open on the left wing with five seconds left. Her shot looked good when launched but skipped off the rim. Louisville's Monique Reid grabbed the rebound, was fouled and hit one of two free throws for the final score. "I thought it was going in," said Ross, a senior from Sarina, Ont. "It's disappointing when you lose, but even so, it was a great weekend. We beat the No. 10 team in the country (Michigan State 77-74 Friday) and take the No. 19 team to the last second. "We've proved we can play with the top 25 teams in the country." Louisville coach Jeff Walz didn't disagree. "I'm just happy to get out of here with a win," he said. "Dayton can play with most teams in the country. I wasn't sure how seriously our girls were taking this game. But when they saw UD beat Michigan State, it got their attention real fast." The biggest lead either team held was UD, 60-53, with 4:53 to go. Then Louisville went on a 6-0 run to get within 60-59. Dayton's last lead was 63-61 on two free throws by Ross with 37 seconds left. Ross had 17 points and Kristin Daughtery 12 for UD. Casey Nance added nine points and 11 rebounds. "It was a great weekend on so many levels even if that last shot doesn't fall," said UD coach Jim Jabir. "We showed we can play with just about anyone. Our defensive effort was outstanding against a team which was a lot quicker and more athletic than we were."
