SANTA FE, N.M., March 16 -- New Mexico State University issued the following news release:

Governor Bill Richardson today congratulated the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State Men's Basketball teams for earning spots in the NCAA Tournament. It's the first time in 11 years that both teams will be representing New Mexico in the national tournament.

"Basketball fans all across the state have a lot to be excited about thanks to the success of the UNM Lobos and the NMSU Aggies," Governor Richardson said. "While the rivalry between the schools runs deep, I think fact that our state is being represented by two such great teams in the NCAA tournament is something all New Mexicans can be proud of."

"I'm very pleased that Governor Richardson has recognized both teams for their accomplishment of getting to the NCAA Tournament," NM State Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston said. "It is a great opportunity to showcase both the NM State and the state brand on a national stage. I'm sure during this period of fiscal austerity in the state and across the country, it will give New Mexicans a chance to celebrate both the Aggies' and Lobo's accomplishments and focus on something positive, if only for a little while."

"It is quite an honor to get such statewide recognition and we appreciate the Governor's interest in our program and support," men's basketball head coach Marvin Menzies said. "Hopefully everyone will listen to what the proclamation says and give us their full support and as much positive energy as they can."

In honor of the team's NCAA tournament appearances, Governor Richardson is declaring Thursday, March 18th "Cheer on UNM Lobos Day," and Friday, March 19th "Cheer on NMSU Aggies Day."

The proclamation is as follows:

WHEREAS, the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State Men's Basketball Team have both earned spots in the NCAA tournament; and

WHEREAS, the NMSU Aggies (22-11) knocked off top-seeded Utah State, 69-63, to take the Western Athletic Conference Tournament title, earning them their spot in the tournament; and

WHEREAS, the UNM Lobos (29-4), currently ranked 8th in the country, earned their spot with a record-breaking season in which they clinched the Mountain West Conference regular season title; and

WHEREAS, for the first time since 1999, both of the state's Division I men's basketball teams will be playing in the NCAA tournament; and

WHEREAS, both teams have ignited a new level of excitement among basketball fans in Albuquerque, Las Cruces and all points in between; and

WHEREAS, I, and fans across the State, will be proudly cheering on the Lobos and Aggies as they represent the State of New Mexico in the Big Dance;

NOW, THEREFORE I, Bill Richardson, Governor of the State of New Mexico, do hereby proclaim Thursday, March 18, 2010 as:

"Cheer on UNM Lobos Day"

And Further, I, Bill Richardson, Governor of the State of New Mexico, do hereby proclaim Friday, March 19, 2010 as:

"Cheer on NMSU Aggies Day"
