HC's search steams ahead

The search continues for Ralph Willard's replacement as Holy Cross men's basketball coach. Sources said former Boston University coach Dennis Wolff and current UMass-Lowell coach Greg Herenda met with HC director of athletics Dick Regan yesterday, and former Crusaders assistants Sean Doherty and Eric Eaton, both now on the staff at Quinnipiac, are interviewing today for the position. University of Notre Dame assistant Sean Kearney met with Regan last week. According to sources, Pitt assistant Tom Herrion, an Oxford High graduate, is also in the mix. Herrion did not return phone messages left yesterday. University of Vermont coach Mike Lonergan has been mentioned as a candidate, but, according to sources, is expected to remain with the Catamounts. Willard resigned earlier this month to become Rick Pitino's top assistant at the University of Louisville. Wolff, 54, was fired in March after 15 seasons at BU. During his tenure, he compiled a 247-197 record and was the program's winningest coach. He led the Terriers to two NCAA appearances (1997, 2002) and three NIT bids (2003,'04,'05). After three straight sub-.500 seasons, BU went 17-13 last year, but lost in the first round of the America East Tournament. Herenda, a 1983 graduate of Merrimack College and an assistant under George Blaney at HC from 1989-94, recently completed his first year as UMass-Lowell's head coach. He guided the River Hawks to 21 victories and a spot in the NCAA Division 2 tournament. Herenda previously was the head coach at Division 3 Cabrini College in Pennsylvania, and served as associate head coach for five seasons at East Carolina. Doherty and Eaton are from Worcester and both served under Willard at Holy Cross. Doherty, a 1987 Burncoat High graduate, was an assistant at HC from 1999-2003, and was the head coach at Salem State from 2003-07. He guided the Vikings to a record of 91-20 (.820) and three NCAA Division 3 tournament appearances. He was a two-time MASCAC Coach of the Year. Doherty previously served as an assistant at Worcester State, his alma mater, and at Assumption College. Eaton, a 1991 graduate of Doherty High who went on to star at UMass-Dartmouth, was on Willard's HC staff from 2000-04. He spent two years as an assistant at the University of Albany, helping guide the Great Danes to an NCAA tournament appearance in 2005-06. He served as associate head coach in 2006-07. Eaton also has been an assistant at Assumption and Anna Maria. Regan set July 1 as a target date for the new hire, and an announcement is likely by early next week. Finalists are expected to meet with Holy Cross president Father Michael McFarland later this week.
