Heart problem ends career of Vols F Negedu

Emmanuel Negedu's career is over. The talented Tennessee sophomore, who collapsed on Sept. 28 after a light workout, had surgery on Tuesday to have a cardiac defibrillator implanted. "This is a very bright young man whose identity was basketball," Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl told FOXSports.com. "Now he'll use his energy and talents in other areas." Negedu, one of the most athletic players in the entire country, spent three nights at the University of Tennessee Medical Center before undergoing more tests at the Cleveland Clinic. "They said the same things that our medical people said here," Pearl said. Negedu, 20, was racing teammate Bobby Maze across the football practice facility when he collapsed and had to be revived by Tennessee trainer Chad Newman with a defibrillator. He had been lifting weights prior to the race. Pearl said he wasn't breathing for about two minutes. "Fortunately, when he fell, it was in the range of our training room," Pearl said. "We were able to get to him quickly." Negedu grew up in Nigeria and spent three years at Brewster Academy. He averaged 1.7 points and 1.9 rebounds in 7.2 minutes per game last season as a freshman. Pearl said that Negedu will remain on scholarship and continue to take classes towards graduation at Tennessee.
