Live blog: Follow NCAA tourney buzz
Welcome to FOXSports.com's live blog of the NCAA tournament. We'll keep you up to speed on all the tourney buzz while you're toiling away at work. Just want the scores? They're in the scorestrip at the top of the screen or you can view the full scoreboard. Check out our blog and chat about the games in the comments section below. Thanks for stopping by. We'll keep it flowing until about 6 p.m. ET.
4:27 p.m. ET — Pitt's loss means the new Big East (Butler) is 1-0 in this tournament and the new ACC (Pitt) is 0-1. It also means the Jamie Dixon-to-USC rumors can officially become more than rumors. The official USC Twitter account had its eye on that game, supposedly for a different reason (wink wink):
4:06 p.m. ET — Wichita State had little trouble knocking off Pitt, despite a potential superstition faux pas. Shockers forward Carl Hall cut off his signature dreadlocks sometime between the Missouri Valley Conference tournament and Thursday's game. Here are the before and after shots (click to enlarge):
3:37 p.m. ET — In case you're still not aware, Marshall Henderson is fantastic:
#OleMiss guard Marshall Henderson was asked if his antics are calculated. “I guess. I don’t know, I’m not really good at math.”— Ben Garrett (@SpiritBen) March 21, 2013
3:29 p.m. ET — Michigan State and Butler are through to the third round. Wichita State is up on Pitt. Memphis out early on Saint Mary's. How's your bracket looking? Christian Laettner is in good shape.
3:08 p.m. ET — Saint Louis forward Cody Ellis' blue mohawk is all the rage right now. See it below, along with some of our other favorite moments in hair so far from the tournament (click on each to enlarge):
(From left: Ellis, Wisconsin's Mike Bruesewitz and Ryan Evans, James Madison head coach Matt Brady, and Saint Louis guard Jordair Jett)
2:55 p.m. ET — This has to be a foul, right?
2:30 p.m. ET — Michigan State holds off Valpo with little trouble, 65-54. Butler-Bucknell has gotten interesting. Wichita State and Pitt are battling. Saint Louis and New Mexico State have started. We're in full swing. Keep up with all the changes with our live bracket.
2:08 p.m. ET — It's Day One of the tourney. Everyone's a little rusty:
1:55 p.m. ET — For all those wondering (and I know you're out there), here are our favorite alums from each of the early-game schools. Valparaiso: JoBe Cerny, voice of the Pillsbury doughboy. Michigan State: Magic Johnson, legend. Bucknell: Josh Herwitt, FOXSports.com editor. Butler: Kurt Vonnegut, strange cat. Wichita State: Bill Parcells, cooker of groceries forced upon him. Pitt: Gene Kelly, singer, dancer, actor, triple threat. And there's more where that came from.
1:46 p.m. ET — A ball got stuck on the rim during Butler-Bucknell. That pretty well sums up that game.
1:43 p.m. ET — Wichita State and Pitt now playing basketball too. Let's hope the hoop is a little bigger in Salt Lake City.
1:28 p.m. ET — Butler up 21-14 on Bucknell at the break in a real barnburner. Our in-office Bucknell grad is not pleased. At halftime of the first two games, the four teams in action had combined to shoot 31.3 percent from the field (35-112). IT'S MADNESS, I TELL YOU!
1:21 p.m. ET — Between Valpo, Bucknell and Butler, our brains are already flooding with great tourney moments. Here's a list of more.
1:06 p.m. ET — Michigan State 35, Valpo 18 at the half. Le'Ron McClain is 20 minutes from losing a Sweet 16 team.
1:03 p.m. ET — Mid-half report in Lexington. Butler 13, Bucknell 10 with 7:39 to go. This game is the reason Kentucky had to play its NIT game Tuesday night on the road.
12:59 p.m. ET — Michigan State now walloping Valpo and Bryce Drew. That's good news for Mark Hamill. He was all over that pick in his official FOX bracket.
12:44 p.m. ET — Mutiple games at once! Former tourney darlings Bucknell and Butler squaring off. More flashbacks ensue: Bucknell had their moment here in 2005. Butler, of course, was this close to winning it all in 2010.
12:38 p.m. ET — Let's see that 1998 Bryce Drew shot again, only with an astronaut involved this time:
12:31 p.m. ET — Mid-half report. Fans of defense are having all their fantasies come true in this first game. It's 8-8 at the 11:24 mark. Save us, Bucknell and Butler. They're next to tip at 12:40.
12:17 p.m. ET — Basketball! We're under way in Auburn Hills with Spartans-Crusaders. As per tradition, Bill Raftery points out that Valpo is playing man-to-man defense.
12:10 p.m. ET — Back in November, we didn't think this is the kind of thing John Calipari would be tweeting in March:
On the road recruitng today. Already on my second stop. About to go by St. Patrick’s for Mass. Hoping to grab some red velvet cake after.— John Calipari (@UKCoachCalipari) March 20, 2013
12:02 p.m. ET — No. 3 seed Michigan State is a 9.5-point favorite over No. 14 Valpo in the day's first game. The Crusaders won the Horizon League but their non-conference slate — featuring wins over the likes of Chicago State and Bethune-Cookman — isn't scaring the Spartans.
11:27 a.m. ET — Dana White implores you to fill out your bracket:
I filled out my bracket now hurry up and fill out urs! on-msn.com/WF3Y08— Dana White (@danawhite) March 21, 2013
11:00 a.m. ET — We're a little over an hour away from first tip, which is Valpo-Michigan State at 12:15 p.m. ET. Now would be an appropriate time to relive some Bryce Drew magic.
