NU onslaught smashes Cougars

Your team's up by 39 points - could this be the moment you save the halftime speech for another day? "I've got too much to say. There's no way I could shut up," Nebraska women's basketball coach Connie Yori said of the situation she faced with her club leading Washington State 59-20 at the break Sunday. "We just went into halftime saying 'Let's just dominate the first five minutes (of the second half), extend our lead' - which we did - 'and go from there.'" Against a team that pushed Kansas State into the final minute Friday night, NU, after tying its record for most points in the first half, remained on the attack until the final horn ended a 107-54 mismatch in the Devaney Sports Center. By the finish, six Huskers had produced double-digit point totals. And three of those players had more points than minutes. "We knew the reason we were up by that much (at halftime) was because we worked hard," said senior forward Kelsey Griffin, who scored 15 points in 14 minutes. "It wasn't given to us. They're a Pac-10 team - we knew we had to play some good basketball." Nebraska was in that mode from the opening tip, as senior guard Dominique Kelley sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around one by freshman Lindsey Moore to give the hosts a quick 9-0 lead. Vonnie Turner, who scored 16 points in 15 minutes, hit another three before NU started settling for other scoring options, most of which the Cougars looked helpless defending. Barely eight minutes in, Nebraska was up by 21. "One of the things Coach emphasizes is if you're open, shoot the ball," said sophomore forward Harleen Sidhu, who scored all 10 of her points in less than two minutes late in the game. Yori noted the main areas she emphasized in the two practices leading up to Sunday's contests were rebounding and handling the ball. Her team proceeded to dominate the boards 59-38, and after making just one turnover in the first 13 minutes, finished with only 12. "To come out and play that way says a lot about who we are as a team and how we practice," Sidhu said. Nebraska's score tied for the 11th highest in school history, and the margin of victory also was the 11th largest. "Washington State is a good team and they're going to win a lot of games," Yori said. "They caught us on a night where we played really well. "I don't know for November if we can play a lot better.
