Nebraska Getting Inside

To most, a matchup involving Nebraska and Southern Cal is something Holiday Bowl representatives are salivating over.

But in Nebraska basketball circles, beating the Trojans on the road is a big deal. Any road win against a BCS opponent, even though it's not a bowl, is a big deal.

With the 51-48 victory at USC, however, came a hangover. The Huskers returned and went through the motions on Dec. 2, but fortunately they were playing the Division I team with the worst RPI last season, Texas-Pan American.

"You can get sassy after a so-called big win. I bragged on them maybe too much," Nebraska coach Doc Sadler said following an 81-53 victory. "I told them the amount of calls I got from coaches about how hard they played and how that was a credit to them."

Texas-Pan American apparently didn't hear the comments. It cut the lead to 45-40 at one point, despite starting no one taller than 6-3 â¿¿- a lineup similar to the one Sadler fielded last year as the shortest team in Division I.

The Huskers eventually broke away down the stretch, but another lesson was learned about bringing intensity into each game as they improved to 5-1.

As much as Nebraska needs to rely on newcomers for a new look this season, particularly with the presence it wants to pose inside, it must draw on seniors for intensity. Short seniors. Guards such as Ryan Anderson, who triggered a decisive 22-2 run against Texas Pan-American by converting a couple of steals into layups and scoring 11 points during the surge.
