The first part of the season has been a big transition for the Friars, who have gone from being one of the most experienced teams in the Big East to one of the least experienced.

While fifth-year senior Sharaud Curry is the team leader, and Brian McKenzie and Marshon Brooks were key members of last year's NIT squad, the rest of the squad either redshirted or wasn't even on campus a year ago.

As a result, some of the drama early in the season has centered on whether the team has the personnel to compete in the Big East. It looks like the answer is yes, in part because coach Keno Davis chose to redshirt two frontcourt players a year ago.

Some who watched Providence practice swore that Bilal Dixon would have made a difference on the inside in 2008-09, and Jamine Peterson looked good, although inconsistent, as a freshman in 2007-08. But Davis chose to make them practice-only players, hoping to give them an extra season down the line instead of using them in small roles on last year's deeper team.

Both have shone in the season's first month. Peterson is the team's leading rebounder and second-leading scorer. Dixon opened his college career with a double-double and has been solid on both ends of the court.

The rest of the rotation is working its way into shape, with freshman Vincent Council a big early contributor. Getting the cast of newcomers into a capable bench with defined roles will be one of the big challenges for Davis before conference play begins.
