Just when you think the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team has turned the corner to become one of the elite college teams in the country, it reminds you how much work must still be done. The 20th-ranked Badgers gave up the most points to an opponent in three seasons in their first true road game of the season and lost to UW-Green Bay 88-84 in overtime Wednesday night at the Resch Center. It was the most points by a UW opponent since Arizona's 94-75 win in a 2006 first-round NCAA tournament game in Philadelphia. "They jumped on us early. I tip my hat to them. They had a good plan and they played it to a T," said UW senior guard Trevon Hughes, whose career-high 27 points weren't enough to stop the Phoenix from winning its first game against UW after 15 straight losses to start the series. About 250 students who were part of an announced record crowd of 9,759 stormed the floor after junior guard Bryquis Perine scored a career-high 22 points to lead five Green Bay scorers in double figures. Green Bay (9-2) shot 48.3 percent overall (28 of 58) and 50 percent from 3-point range (9-for-18) while winning its fifth straight game. Both were season highs for a UW opponent. It also became just the second team since the 2006-07 season to score more than 80 points against UW. The other was Duke during its 82-58 win over the Badgers on Nov. 27, 2007 in Durham, N.C. "'They hit shots," said Bo Ryan, who was going for his 200th career win at UW. "I've been doing this a long time and when people make shots like that it's very difficult." Junior forward Jon Leuer had a career-high 26 points for the Badgers (6-2), who shot 45.3 percent overall (24 of 53) and 36.8 percent from 3-point range (7-for-18) and had their three-game winning streak snapped. "You have to keep fighting and clawing your way back. I thought we did that a couple of times and showed some resiliency but they just kept putting us back in a hole," Leuer said. "They kept executing and getting the shots they wanted." In overtime, UW managed just one field goal in 10 attempts. The Badgers scored just five points on three free throws by Leuer and two free throws by Jason Bohannon and trailed 87-80 with 20.7 seconds left. Leuer made the Badgers' lone field goal of the overtime with 9.6 seconds left. The Phoenix had just two field goals but also made eight of 10 free throws. "It's a frustrating loss. We should have had this one," said Hughes, who scored 15 straight points for the Badgers at one point of the second half. "They came ready to play from the jump and we came like halfway. You can't do that." Hughes already had scored nine straight points for UW when Green Bay opened a 60-53 lead following a free throw by Pat Nelson with 9:49 left. Hughes promptly scored six more points to close the Badgers to 60-59 following two free throws with 8:38 to go. Ryan gave Hughes a break at that point but UW didn't slow down. After a Ryan Evans steal, Leuer dunked following a feed by Bohannon to give UW a 61-60 lead. The Badgers led again at 63-62 following an Evans layup but that's the point when Green Bay's offense got busy again and got consecutive buckets by Perine, Cordero Barkley (11 points) and Rahmon Fletcher (18) to grab a 68-63 lead with 5:02 left. Leuer responded with a three-point play and, after a free throw by Green Bay's Randy Berry, Bohannon's 3-pointer tied it at 69 with 3:50 to go. It was Bohannon's first bucket of the game. Berry and Fletcher each made two free throws in between two misses at the line by Hughes to give Green Bay a 73-69 lead with 2:37 left. Green Bay had a chance to go up by six after Fletcher stole the ball from Bohannon on UW's next possession. But Perine missed on a drive, Hughes grabbed the rebound and went coast-to-coast and scored on a drive. After Fletcher missed and the ball went out of bounds to UW, Hughes scored again from the paint to knot the score at 73 with 1:18 to go. Perine gave Green Bay a 75-73 lead after Ryan Evans fouled him in the paint and he made two free throws with 25.2 seconds left. UW tied the score after Leuer rebounded a miss by Hughes and got the put-back with 8.7 seconds left. Perine had a chance to win it for Green Bay but his shot from just outside the free throw line bounced off the rim just before the buzzer.
