Seton Hall Getting Inside

The problem with a less-than-impressive nonconference schedule is that even with Seton Hall's strong start to the season, it's hard to tell how good the Pirates really are.

Sure, Bobby Gonzalez's club began the season with an undefeated November, including two victories on the road. But the toughest game among the five was a trip to Cornell, a dangerous squad that nevertheless plays in the non-scholarship Ivy League. The other victory away from home came against Monmouth.

Nevertheless, the cupcake-filled Thanksgiving season allowed Gonzalez to merge some of his new players in with the returning corps to get a good look as to what he has.

The "some" refers to Keon Lawrence, who was suspended indefinitely from the team indefinitely following a car accident in the early-morning hours in November, right before the start of the season.

Lawrence faced charges for driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license. Melyvn Oliver also missed part of the nonconference schedule to concentrate on academics.

But there was nothing wrong with Herb Pope, and the New Mexico State transfer has made an immediate impact on the inside.

Pope paired with center John Garcia and swingman Robert Mitchell, and the group was augmented by freshmen Jamel Jackson and Ferrakohn Hall. That gives the Pirates a bigger, deeper and more athletic look than a year ago.

Will that be enough to get the Pirates into the top half of the Big East? Unfortunately, fans probably won't know whether that's a realistic goal or not until the conference schedule begins, since Seton Hall will enter that portion of the season largely untested.
