It seems as if Stanford, while not as good as it wants to be, may not be as bad as its fans feared it might.

The Cardinal went 4-3 in November, including a competitive overtime loss to Kentucky that no one saw coming.

Still, Stanford has issues headed toward the Pac-10 season.

The team has little depth, especially up front, where the starters include transfer Andrew Zimmerman and walk-on Jack Trotter.

Good news came on the eve of the season opener when sophomore guard Jeremy Green, who had been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence, was cleared and reinstated.

But Green and senior Landry Fields represent much of Stanford's offensive firepower -- combining to average more than 38 points per game -- so coach Johnny Dawkins' equation is a delicate one.

Picked last in the conference by the Pac-10 media, Stanford may have the pluck to escape that basement spot. But don't expect too much more than that. And the Cardinal must keep its key players healthy or face serious woes.
