Williams transferring from Duke for family reasons

Elliott Williams is leaving Duke. The school announced that the sophomore guard has decided to transfer for "family medical reasons." Williams, whose mother is sick, will file an appeal for a waiver in an attempt to play this season closer to his hometown of Memphis. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Elliot and his family," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement released by the school. "We fully support him in his efforts to be closer to them during this trying time. He is a good young man with an opportunity to become an outstanding player. We wish him well as he determines his future. He will always be a part of our program and we will always be in his corner." More than likely, according to sources close to the situation, Williams will play for his hometown Memphis Tigers. It may not look like a major blow to Duke, since Williams only averaged 4.2 points last season, but he started 11 of the last 12 of the season and with the departure of Gerald Henderson to the NBA, Williams' role was expected to increase significantly.
