DePaul fires Wainwright after five seasons

The 63-year-old Wainwright, one of the more likeable coaches in the industry, was let go on Monday afternoon after a five-plus year run in which the Blue Demons were more than 20 games below the .500 mark.
Assistant Tracy Webster, an Illinois native, will take over on an interim basis.
"At this time a change needed to be made in the direction of the men's basketball program at DePaul University," DePaul athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto said in a statement. "We are very grateful to Coach Wainwright for his service to our student-athletes and our University community. He provided unwavering leadership in assisting our student-athletes in both their academic and personal growth. He was instrumental in helping to solidify our infrastructure by improving our staffing, our budget and our facilities."
DePaul struggled to a winless Big East slate last season, but appeared to have a chance to turn things around earlier this season after handing Northern Iowa its lone loss and playing with Tennessee at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.
However, top player Mac Koshwal suffered a foot injury that forced him to miss eight games. Koshwal returned recently, but DePaul has lost four straight -- three in the league and one to Florida Gulf Coast.
The luck got worse for Wainwright -- who suffered a torn ACL and a fractured tibia in a sideline collision against Villanova earlier in the week.
DePaul was 59-80 in Wainright’s tenure and 7-8 this season and 0-3 in Big East play.
