Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater had more than the Southern Mississippi defense to contend with on Saturday. Battling the heavy rain, Bridgewater threw for 85 yards a score as the No. 19 Cardinals won 21-17 at Hattiesburg, Miss., to improve to 5-0, their best start in six seasons.

When Kentucky tailback Raymond Sanders dove past South Carolina safety Brison Williams and into the end zone for this TD, the Wildcats a 17-7 lead over the sixth-ranked team in the nation. But a 31-0 second half turned it into a laugher for the Gamecocks, 38-17 winners in Lexington, Ky.

Which in this case is not for long. When Virginia Tech running back Michael Holmes scored in the fourth quarter to give his team a 17-13 lead, he got a hug from assistant coach Shane Beamer. But hard to imagine they were hugging when host Cincinnati scored with 13 seconds left to win the game 27-24.

One reason Virginia Tech's hugs turned to tears? This 76-yard TD by Cincinnati running back Ralph David Abernathy (No. 1), who outruns Hokies cornerback Kyle Fuller to get into the end zone. The play gave the Bearcats the lead back at 20-17 with 7:51 to play, and Cincinnati eventually won 27-24.

Clearly this is early in Saturday's game at Kentucky, as South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier seeks out an official. The No. 6 Gamecocks had to rally from a 17-7 halftime deficit to win going away 38-17.

It takes two Ohio State Buckeyes to take down Michigan State running back Nick Hill (20) in the first quarter at Spartan Stadium on Saturday. Fourteenth-ranked OSU only allowed 34 rushing yards in a 17-16 victory.

The host Spartans prepare to take the field before their Big Ten opener against the Buckeyes in East Lansing, Mich. With the one-point loss, No. 20 Michigan State fell to 3-2 on the season; Ohio State remained unbeaten at 5-0.
