The SEC looks down, the Pac-10 and Big Ten look up and the rest of the BCS conferences are fighting to get a handle on who will step up and make a run for conference crowns. The Pac-10 and SEC are the only two conferences to have 50 percent of their teams in the AP's top 25. But that's deceiving. Both conferences have some teams that are ripe for a face plant, and some other hyped BCS conferences' teams aren't that far behind. Lisa Horne looks at the most disappointing teams so far.

The Hokies faced a lose-lose situation in the first week. Beat Boise State and pundits will say that the Broncos were overrated anyway. Lose to Boise State and well, you stink. The Hokies lost, and everyone said a prayer for their next opponent, James Madison. Not only was Virginia Tech embarrassed, but its 21-16 loss also threw a wrench into Boise State's case for a BCS championship game invite.

All those high expectations in Tallahassee came crashing down Saturday when Oklahoma gave the Seminoles such a beat-down that television viewers were changing channels in the third quarter to watch the Michigan-Notre Dame game instead. Down 34-7 at the half, the Seminoles were never in the game. And to think Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops probably took the pedal off the gas so as to not embarrass his brother Mark, the Seminoles' defensive coordinator.

Miami came into the preseason ranked No. 13 in the AP top 25, the swagger was reportedly back and many pundits picked the 'Canes to win the ACC. Then Ohio State gave Miami an absolute shellacking before a national television audience. And what was Miami's response? All players must deactivate their Twitter accounts to avoid distractions. The bright spot for depressed 'Canes fans: Miami's schedule doesn't look quite as daunting from here on out as was originally feared. Suddenly, Pitt, Florida State, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and South Florida don't look as intimidating, now do they?

Unless the Bruins win their next 10 games, Rick Neuheisel's third-year record will be worse than his predecessor Karl Dorrell's —- by a landslide. To be fair, the Bruins have a nasty September schedule -— at Kansas State, Stanford, Houston, at Texas —- but the total ineptitude displayed last week in the 35-0 blowout by Stanford has drained all passion buckets in Westwood.

The Tigers are 2-0, but it took the NCAA's microscope to neutralize their first opponent (North Carolina) and the best possible draw from the SEC East (Vanderbilt) to get them there. As luck would have it, their next two games are against Mississippi State and West Virginia, two teams that have floundered so far this season. Is Les Miles really this lucky? No. Alabama, Arkansas and Auburn should get three L's for the Mad Hatter and put him officially on the hot seat.

The Panthers lost to Utah, 27-24, in overtime in Week 1, then beat New Hampshire, 38-16, last week. Running back Dion Lewis' campaign for the Heisman Trophy may be all but over (102 yards in two games). At some point, Pitt should improve, but with the patience the school's alumni and boosters have shown coach Dave Wannstedt, improvement needs to be sooner, not later. At this point, the Big East's automatic qualifying status for a BCS bowl should be seriously questioned.

Yep, the defense looks nasty. In fact, the defense has kept the Gators in both of their games against Miami (OH) and South Florida. Do we need to really explain why Florida is on this list when their wins against South Florida and Miami (OH) were due to defense? The loss of Tim Tebow cannot be minimized, and his importance to the team is starting to become more and more apparent. Florida is blessed to have great athletes, but the Gators are clearly ranked too high at No. 10.

Bulldogs fans have been hoping that with a new defensive coordinator (Todd Grantham), the one glaring weakness in Georgia football would finally be addressed. The only thing that has been addressed so far is that Grantham has no problem exchanging barbs with South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier. Georgia is now officially out of the top 25 polls, and suddenly, its annual game against Florida doesn't look so exciting. South Carolina looks like the best team in the SEC East (as predicted by yours truly in the preseason), but the Gamecocks are still being overlooked by pollsters who obviously haven't been watching these two teams actually play.

USC started the Lane Kiffin era in paradise, but the game ended with Hawaii exposing a glaring deficiency: the Trojans' pass defense. Kiffin temporarily calmed the Trojan masses by saying he would be "shocked" if the defense didn't play extremely well against Virginia. The defense was improved, but the offense appeared to regress in a 17-14 win. The Trojans may be 2-0, but they could be looking straight into the barrel of a 7-6 season.

The Mountaineers are 2-0 and ranked in the top 25, but somehow, they just don't fill the bill. West Virginia had an opportunity to impress pollsters in Week 2 but had to overcome a 21-6 lead by Marshall in the fourth quarter to win. As soft as West Virginia's schedule is, the Mountaineers had better step up their game quickly or the "pity-the-Big-East" votes will be harder to find down the road.
