In the short history of the BCS Championship Series, football fans have been treated to some epic contests—they've kept us riveted to our seats due to compelling storylines, last-minute heroics and controversial calls. And while the debate over the BCS' fairness rages on, there is no debate as to which BCS Bowls have represented college football in its finest hours. Here are our top BCS Bowls. – Lisa Horne

CFB 24 1080 Best all-time BCS bowl games 30443277 2006 Rose Bowl BCS Championship Game 2006+Rose+Bowl+BCS+Championship+Game CFB No. 1 USC had two Heisman Trophy winners in Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush (the latter who forfeited his trophy) in its backfield. No. 2 Texas had a chip on its shoulder due to what the team perceived was a double insult—virtually every college football expert picked USC to win the game and QB Vince Young didn't win the Heisman.

But in the fourth quarter and with USC ahead, Young went on a rampage with two huge touchdowns to give his team the win. Not only did Texas pull the upset with a 41-38 victory, but Young's performance gave Heisman voters pause for thought.

CFB 24 1080 Best all-time BCS bowl games 30443276 2007 Fiesta Bowl 2007+Fiesta+Bowl CFB The No. 7 Oklahoma Sooners faced the No. 9 Boise State Broncos in what many football fans felt was a farce of a bowl — they couldn't fathom a team from the WAC facing a Big 12 powerhouse in a BCS bowl. While football purists were stewing over this match-up, the rest of the country saw one of the most — if not the most dramatic victories in college football history. In the last 86 seconds of regulation, the teams combined to score 22 points.

It finally ended when Boise State's Jared Zabransky brilliantly faked a pass to his right and executed a perfect "Statue of Liberty" play — known as "Statue Left" in the Broncos' playbook—by handing the ball off to Ian Johnson who raced to the left, scored on a two-point conversion and then proposed to his girlfriend, a Boise State cheerleader. The Broncos won the game, 43-42, and the hearts of Americans as well.

CFB 24 1080 Best all-time BCS bowl games 30443279 2003 Fiesta Bowl Championship Game 2003+Fiesta+Bowl+Championship+Game CFB The nearly two-touchdown favorite Miami Hurricanes came into the Fiesta Bowl with a 24-game winning streak and a No. 1 ranking while the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes were undefeated in the regular season. Things got exciting in the fourth quarter — Miami running back Willis McGahee went down with a severe knee injury, both teams missed critical field goals, and eventually, the game went into overtime with a 17-17 score.

In the first overtime period, Miami scored on a Ken Dorsey to Kellen Winslow seven-yard pass. The Buckeyes were up next, and on 4th and 3 at the five-yard line, had one final shot to score a touchdown or lose. QB Craig Krenzel threw the ball to receiver Chris Gamble in the end zone, but the ball hit Gamble's hands and fell to the ground. The official closest to the play ruled it an incomplete pass, but a flag was thrown and pass interference was called on defender Glen Sharpe, giving the Buckeyes a fresh set of downs on the two-yard line. Instant replay indicated that the ball hit Gamble's hands before Sharpe made contact with Gamble and "the controversy" was born.

Miami couldn't score in the second overtime against the stingy Buckeye defense and Ohio State won, 31-24. The infamous "pass interference" call will continue to haunt Miami and cause angst for Ohio State, as the legitimacy of their title has been questioned by many fans.

CFB 24 1080 Best all-time BCS bowl games 30443273 2000 Orange Bowl 2000+Orange+Bowl CFB Alabama seemed to be destined to win this game from the get-go, nursing a 14-point lead on Michigan twice during the game. But by the third quarter, Michigan had evened it up at 14-14. And in the fourth quarter, the two teams again tied it up at 28-28. But Alabama blocked a potential game-winning Michigan field goal attempt, sending the game into overtime.

QB Tom Brady gunned a 25-yard pass for a touchdown for Michigan's first lead of the game. Alabama answered back, but on the ensuing PAT, Ryan Pflugner missed the chip shot and Michigan prevailed, 35-34.

The Buckeyes took a 21-0 lead in the second quarter against the Wildcats and it appeared that this would be a yawner of a game, but the Wildcats' Darren Sproles scored a touchdown and the teams went into halftime with the Buckeyes leading. In the third quarter, Kansas State engineered a mini-comeback by getting a second touchdown and making it a 28-14 game, but the Buckeyes stretched their lead out to 35-14 and the game appeared over. The fourth quarter saw Kansas State score two touchdowns, and down 35-28 with less than three minutes to play, there was little doubt the Wildcats would try an onside kick. They did, but the Buckeyes recovered the kick and milked the clock for the victory, 35-28.

CFB 24 1080 Best all-time BCS bowl games 30443275 2005 Rose Bowl 2005+Rose+Bowl CFB In a rare Rose Bowl moment, both a representative from the Pac-10 and the Big Ten were not playing each other in the Rose Bowl—USC, the Pac-10 champion, was playing the Big 12's champion Oklahoma for the BCS Championship. Cal, the second place Pac-10 team, was leapfrogged by Texas in the final regular season polls and the Rose Bowl selected Texas to play in the Rose Bowl.

If there was ever a game where the classic "whoever has the ball last, wins" adage rang true, this game was it. Texas quarterback Vince Young could not be contained, but neither could Michigan's Steve Breaston, who set a Rose Bowl record of 315 total yards. The second half saw nine different scoring plays, and at the 3:04 mark in the fourth quarter, Michigan's field goal to wrest the lead from Texas, 37-35, seemed like the nail in the proverbial coffin. But Texas' Dusty Magnum sent a 37-yard field goal, as time expired on the clock, wobbling through the uprights and Texas won, 38-37.

In the end, it really did come down to who had the ball last.

CFB 24 1080 Best all-time BCS bowl games 30443278 2005 Sugar Bowl 2005+Sugar+Bowl CFB The Auburn Tigers went 13-0 in the regular season, but didn't get enough pollster love in the BCS rankings and were relegated to the Sugar Bowl against Virginia Tech. The Tigers won 16-13, and head coach Tommy Tuberville was hoping for an AP No. 1 ranking, which would create a split National Champion with the winner of the Oklahoma-USC title game.

USC beat Oklahoma 55-19 in the Orange Bowl's BCS Championship game, while Auburn committed two turnovers in the second half and gave up an 80-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter. But the pleading by Tuberville for No. 1 votes prior to the BCS title game (and even with a live guest appearance at the BCS Championship's halftime show) made it an exciting 24 hours.

CFB 24 1080 Best all-time BCS bowl games 30443280 2006 Sugar Bowl 2006+Sugar+Bowl CFB The Georgia Bulldogs were double-digit favorites against the West Virginia Mountaineers for good reason — the Mountaineers were led by a freshman quarterback and the bowl was moved to the Bulldogs' backyard in Atlanta after the traditional Sugar Bowl's venue, the Louisiana Superdome, was damaged from Hurricane Katrina.

West Virginia led 28-0 by the second quarter, but the Bulldogs fought back were behind 31-21 by halftime. By the fourth quarter, West Virginia was clinging to only a three-point lead. With 1:26 left in the game, it appeared that Georgia would get one last shot at either winning the game or sending it into overtime when West Virginia faced a fourth and 6 at its own 45-yard line. In a gutsy move, punter Phil Brady faked a punt and converted the fourth down on a 10-yard run to help pick up the win, 38-35.

CFB 24 1080 Best all-time BCS bowl games 30443282 2009 Fiesta Bowl 2009+Fiesta+Bowl CFB Due to the Big 12's tie-breaking rules, Oklahoma got the nod to represent the Big 12 South in the conference's championship game against Missouri. This controversy left the 11-1 Longhorns, who had beaten Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, no opportunity to play for the BCS Championship since they weren't a conference champion. Even worse, they were pitted against Ohio State, a team that had lost two previous BCS Championship games and were becoming a punch line in college football.

The first half was uninspiring with Ohio State's two field goals and Texas' solo shot through the uprights as the only points scored. The Longhorns had the lead going into the fourth quarter before the Buckeyes came back with two touchdowns and a field goal. Down 21-17, quarterback Colt McCoy led his Longhorns on a two-minute offensive drive that resulted in the go-ahead touchdown with 16 seconds left in the game. McCoy finished the game with 41 of 59 passes, 414 yards, three touchdowns and one interception as the Longhorns won, 24-21.
