As you can see, these mythical creatures are really just old fat guys waiting to take a cigarette break. No pot of gold, no lucky charms. Reality bites.

Even Joe Theismann, who set school records and led the Irish to back-to-back Cotton Bowl victories, was a little bit a product of Notre Dame legend-making. During the QB's All-American season of 1970, Notre Dame's publicity guru had Theismann change the pronunciation of his name to rhyme with Heisman. Didn't work, as he lost out to Jim Plunkett. But it's better than making up a story about a dead girlfriend.

Charlie Weis came to coach his alma mater in 2004, touted as an offensive genius after helping the New England Patriots with three Super Bowls. He led the Irish to BCS bowls (but no victories) his first two years, then flamed out spectacularly with a 3-9 season, the worst in school history. Two .500 seasons followed, and while the Irish ended a nine-game bowl losing streak, the Hawaii Bowl victory wasn't enough to keep Weis from being fired in 2009.

Manti Te'o and the 2012 Notre Dame team were billed as legit title contenders after an undefeated season steered them into the BCS championship game. But Te'o and the Irish were bowled over by Eddie Lacy and Alabama, 42-14, and exposed as pretenders rathers than contenders.

Remember Ron Powlus? After the Pennsylvania high school star QB signed a letter of intent to play for the Irish, analyst Beano Cook predicted Powlus would win not only one Heisman trophy, but two. Starting 42 of 44 regular-season games, Powlus had a decent run in South Bend, setting 20 school records as the Irish went 30-17-1 during his four years as starter. He finished his college career with 52 TD passes and 7,602 yards ... plus, he led the Golden Domers to three bowl games, missing one because of an injury. Unfortunately, just as he failed to win those Heismans, Notre Dame failed to win any of those bowl games.

George O'Leary was hired to replace Bob Davie as coach of the Fighting Irish in 2001, and then fired just days later. Turns out, the former Georgia Tech coach had some holes in his résumé, which stated that he had a master's degree from NYU-Stony Brook (no such college) and that he earned three letters playing football at New Hampshire (he never played a game). O'Leary admitted he'd been padding his résumé his whole career. On paper, a great hire. In reality, just the opposite.

CFB 24 43 The many myths of Notre Dame 31540246 Rudy Rudy CFB

He may have been small, but Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger is just as big in Notre Dame lore as anyone who ever played there. A walk-on, Rudy suited up just once at the end of his career, after teammates threatened to turn in their jerseys if the coaches didn't play him, and sacked the QB in his last play, leading teammates to carry him off the field. His story became a movie, but like most, it embellished the story. Teammates didn't demand he play. The crowd didn't call for him. And the celebratory carry-off was more horseplay than hero worship. Strike that, and several other made-up movie details, from the record. As Rudy showed later in life, it was hard to live up to the legend.

CFB 24 43 The many myths of Notre Dame 31540240 The Gipper The+Gipper CFB

There's no bigger Notre Dame legend than the Gipper. George Gipp starred for Knute Rockne's famed teams, died young and on his deathbed spoke the immortal words that Rockne later used in his "Win one for the Gipper" halftime speech against Army. The tale was so inspiring that it became a movie, with Ronald Reagan (pictured) playing Gipp, and then a legend. Except it was far from true. Gipp was never called "the Gipper." Rockne wasn't at his deathbed. And many details of their lives and deaths have been glossed over in the decades since.

The tale of All-American Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o was too good to be true. A story that Te'o's girlfriend had died of leukemia — a loss he said inspired him to lead the Irish to the BCS championship game — was revealed to be a hoax, with the university calling it a sick joke played on Te'o while we're left to wonder if he duped us all. But really, when it comes to Notre Dame and it's folklore, there's always a big difference between the Manti and the myth.
