SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: Lost in all of the hubbub of QB Max Hall's words of "hate" following Andrew George's catch-and-run game-winner against Utah on Nov. 28 was the continued health and productivity of RB Harvey Unga. The junior, who may consider an NFL career after the bowl season, had 23 carries for 116 yards. Time off could be a great benefit for him, though it's not a guarantee. Unga severely injured his hamstring in a non-contact drill late in fall camp that forced him to miss the Labor Day weekend opener against Oklahoma. Unga's presence, according to most opposing head coaches, changes the way the Cougars must be defended.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: A classic bend-but-don't-break-scheme could meet its match against the Beavers, who went toe-to-toe with high-powered Oregon on Dec. 3 for the right to go to the Rose Bowl. BYU's unit, however, did its best work the last two weeks of the season in shutting down nuanced Air Force and then limiting big-play opportunities from rival Utah.

MATCHUP TO WATCH: BYU QB Max Hall vs. an Oregon State defense that hung tough with Oregon -- Hall is looking to finish off his career with one more win, which would tack onto a three-year starting career that became the winningest all-time at BYU ahead of such names as Jim McMahon, Steve Young and (now second place) Ty Detmer. Hall will have a healthy roster of weapons, and perhaps this is also a showcase that puts a few NFL eyes upon him.
