Callaway resigns as UAB football coach

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)

Neil Callaway has resigned as football coach at UAB after failing to post a winning record in five seasons.

Athletic Director Brian Mackin announced the move Sunday, a day after the Blazers finished 3-9 with a 38-35 loss to previously winless Florida Atlantic. In Callaway's five seasons as coach, the Blazers went 18-42.

''I met with Coach Callaway earlier today and we mutually agreed that his tenure as our football coach will not be extended,'' Mackin said in a statement. ''I want to thank Neil for his service during his five years as head coach of our football program. There have been many positives attained in his time as head coach, especially the improvement in our APR scores and overall academic success the past several years.

''However, we have not experienced the level of success on the field that we all desire and expect for this program.''

Mackin said that a national search for a new coach will begin immediately.

Callaway was hired at UAB in December, 2006 after spending six seasons as the offensive coordinator at Georgia, and also has had stints as an assistant at Auburn and Alabama. This was his first head coaching job.

He received a one-year contract extension in June through 2012 but no raise on his $360,000 salary. Mackin did not immediately disclose any financial details in Callaway's departure.

Callaway did not immediately respond to a message on his cell phone.

Mackin said he would discuss the coaching change and the program's future at a news conference Monday morning.

This season the Blazers dealt with a season-ending injury to start quarterback Bryan Ellis. They lost their first six games but did have a late-season upset of Southern Mississippi, which is playing in the Conference USA championship game.
