Canadian doctor says HGH was for his use

A sports doctor at the center of drug investigations in Canada and the United States said Monday he treated Alex Rodriguez after the Yankees slugger had hip surgery last year and prescribed anti-inflammatories but not human growth hormone.

Physician Anthony Galea also told The Associated Press an assistant who was stopped at the U.S.-Canadian border in Buffalo, N.Y., last year was carrying only a minuscule amount of HGH - which Galea said was for his own use. The doctor reiterated that he has never given the drug to an athlete.

"I only brought enough for her to do two injections into me because I was away for two nights," Galea said.

FSU HOLDS JU TO ONE HIT

Three Florida State pitchers combined for a one-hit shutout in a 2-0 baseball victory over over host JU.

Alex Martinez singled off Tyler Everett in the ninth inning for the Dolphins (6-5).

Mike McGee earned the win for the Seminoles (11-0), striking out eight in six innings.

Boise State S Jason Robinson was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. Robinson, a senior, made 26 tackles in 2009. ... New Michigan athletic director David Brandon said Monday there's nothing in the NCAA allegations hovering over the football team that has put coach Rich Rodriguez's job status in question. "He's our coach for this season," Brandon said.

AROUND COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Bob Nash was fired as coach of Hawaii's men's basketball team after posting a 34-56 record over three seasons. Nash became head coach in 2007 after 23 seasons as an assistant coach. ... Purdue F Robbie Hummel had reconstructive surgery on the ACL in his right knee on Monday. Boilermakers coach Matt Painter said the standard recovery time is four-to-six months.

AROUND THE NHL

Boston Bruins C Marc Savard was diagnosed with a grade two concussion after being leveled by a blindside hit by Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke on Sunday. The Bruins medical staff will continue to monitor and evaluate Savard for up to five days before they offer an update on his prognosis. ... C Keith Aucoin signed a two-year contract extension with the Washington Capitals.

AROUND AREA COLLEGES

The Jacksonville University women's golf team shot a 308 in the second round of the JMU Eagle Landing Invitational in Orange Park, and is in 11th place heading into today's final round. Jessica Williams is tied for 10th individually with a two-round total 150 for JU, which trails leader Central Arkansas (596) by 24 strokes. ... Florida State senior infielder Stephen Cardullo was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week.
