Clemson gives Bowden contract extension

, SC (Sports Network) - University and head football coach Tommy Bowden agreed on a three-year contract extension Tuesday. "This football program is on solid ground," said athletic director Dr. Terry Don Phillips. "We look forward to the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl this year, but the outlook for this program for years to come is bright."

Bowden's salary will remain the same at $1.1 million a year with an additional $300,000 in incentives. With the extension, Bowden's contract will run through the 2010 season.

The announcement of the extension comes a day after Bowden was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coach of the Year. The son of Bobby Bowden, the career leader in victories among major college coaches, led the Tigers to an 8-4 record and a berth in the Peach Bowl on January 2. Tommy beat his father Bobby for the first time in his career on November 8 with a 26-10 win at Death Valley.

"I was pleased when Dr. Phillips approached me about a contract extension," Bowden said. "This contract shows the University has confidence in my abilities to guide this program for the long term."

The Tigers won their final three games over , Duke and by a combined score of 129-34 after losing two of their previous three contests.

Bowden entered the 2003 season on the hot seat following a 55-15 blowout loss to in the Tangerine Bowl. To complicate matters, started this season with a 30-0 loss at home to inter-conference rival Georgia.

"As I stated prior to the game, I am very proud of coach Bowden, his staff and players," Dr. Phillips said. "They showed great resiliency and great character over the course of the season."

Bowden has compiled a 36-24 record in his fifth season at and a 54-28 mark in eight seasons overall. Bowden took the job prior to the 1999 season after leading to a perfect 11-0 record in 1998.

"We have made progress over the last five years overall and this season in particular," Bowden added. "However, we strive for more."
