DALE MARTIN HAS SURGERY

Akron, Ohio, March 23 -- University of Akron issued the following news release: University of Akron rising sophomore running back Dale Martin, who sat out last fall after transferring from the University of Louisville, will miss the next four-six months after tearing his Achilles tendon in the team's final practice (Mar. 12) prior to the University's spring break. The Bolingbrook, Ill., native had successful surgery this past Monday (Mar. 16) and is expected to contribute as soon as he is cleared by the Akron medical personnel as he used an NCAA redshirt at Louisville for the 2007 season his true freshman year. The injury happened late in the team's scrimmage as he caught a pass in the flat and turned to run up field. "First, I am happy Dale was able to have surgery as quickly as he did and begin the healing process," said sixth-year Zips' head coach J.D. Brookhart. "Dale has battled back from a couple of other injuries and I have no doubt he will do the same this time. We are very encouraged, from the reports after the surgery, and know athletes of his age are able to return from this injury at the same level of speed and mobility as they did prior. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the best-case scenario and looking forward to having him for the start of fall camp this August. This certainly is a setback in the short term, but, with a healthy Alex Allen, veteran Joe Tuzze and the other backs we return, we still should be in good shape for 2009 if Martin's return is later." Akron will conduct two more weeks of spring drills with camp closing Saturday, April 4, with the annual Spring Game. As part of that day, The University of Akron Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will host its annual Spring Festival, presented by Chick-fil-A on Howe Avenue, from 11 am-2 pm. The festivities begin at 11:15 am when fans can take hard hat tours of InfoCision Stadium Summa Field (weather permitting) until 2:00 pm. Tour sizes will be limited to 15 or less and assigned on a first come basis. Those wishing to take a tour must wear closed toed shoes. More information will be available in the coming days so please continue to check GoZips.com. The tours will officially begin a kickoff celebration for InfoCision Stadium Summa Field as 2009 season football tickets and club seats will also be available for purchase. This will be the last chance for fans to purchase tickets at the discounted holiday rates. The street festival, held between the Stile Field House and the Lee Jackson Softball Field, will begin at 11:00 am and run until 2:00 pm. The festival will have food, games, inflatables, face painting, live music, a clown and an appearance by Scooby Doo and Sponge Bob. The annual Blue-Gold spring football game will begin at Noon in the Stile Field House and the street festival will conclude at 2 pm as the Akron softball squad hosts Eastern Michigan. Admission and parking are free. Fans can enter the event through the Student Recreation Center or the Stile Athletic Field House main entrance on Union Street. There are several events on campus that day so parking will be limited.
