Jags sign draft pick Dillard

The Jaguars signed rookie fifth-round pick Jarett Dillard on Thursday to a four-year contract worth up to $2.67 million, leaving the club with six picks left to sign before the Aug. 2 start of training camp. A wide receiver from Rice, Dillard receives a $192,300 signing bonus along with minimum salaries of $310,000, $385,000, $480,000 and $565,000, plus an escalator to $1.3 million in the fourth season. The club now has signed three players from its 2009 draft class. Jacksonville's top picks -- offensive tackles Eugene Monroe (first round) and Eben Britton (second round), defensive tackle Terrance Knighton and cornerback Derek Cox (both in the third round) -- remain unsigned. All of them, with the exception of Monroe, should be routine signings because of the league's slotting system. The base salaries they'll receive are expected to be the same four-year minimums acquired by Dillard and fourth-rounder Mike Thomas, with a fourth-year escalator. The escalator compensates for the fact that players signing four-year deals aren't eligible to become restricted free agents after their third season. Monroe's signing, meanwhile, is expected to be more complicated. The Jaguars traded up to the No. 8 slot last year to select defensive end Derrick Harvey, who staged the longest holdout (33 days) in franchise history before receiving a $23.8 million contract that included $17.175 million in guaranteed money, worth $33.4 million in total value. As the No. 8 overall pick in the 2009 draft, Monroe expects to sign a contract worth more than Harvey's deal because of the trend of yearly salary increases for each rookie class. The question is how much more? Monroe and his agent, Sunny Shah, expressed optimism Thursday about the tackle reporting to camp on time. "I expect to be there on time," Monroe said. "I've got a lot of work to do." Dillard was one of three receivers selected in the draft by the Jaguars. Tiquan Underwood and Thomas are the other rookies, and all are expected to play key roles this season. Dillard, 23, set several school records at Rice as well as several conference and NCAA marks in finishing his college career with 292 catches for 4,138 yards and 60 touchdowns. Dillard's 60 TD receptions broke the previous NCAA mark of 50 set by former Jags receiver Troy Edwards. Dillard, who started in 46 of his 49 career games at Rice, is the only player in college - football history to haul in 20 or more TD receptions in two seasons. michael.wright@jacksonville.com, (904) 359-4657
