National Signing Day normally is filled with unbridled optimism and lofty expectations, as was the case Wednesday at Marshall university. However, the Thundering Herd's 2009 recruiting class included its share of disappointments. Among them: -Freddie Moore reneged on his verbal commitment and signed with Alabama-Birmingham, which is located closer to his hometown of Decatur, Ala. Appropriately enough, it ended a recruiting process in which Moore seemingly changed his mind more than an indecisive woman perusing an extensive menu at a fancy restaurant. Moore, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound wide receiver from Austin High School, committed to Marshall in July but admitted having second thoughts in August, when he visited Southern Mississippi. Marshall coaches reportedly pulled his scholarship offer this week when they learned he was flirting with UAB. -Two of the five mid-year junior college transfers who signed with the Thundering Herd in December failed to qualify academically and were unable to enroll in January, which would have allowed them to participate in spring practice. One of them - Troy Evans, a 5-9, 200-pound athlete from Laney (Calif.) Community College - signed another national letter of intent Wednesday and is expected to join the Thundering Herd this summer, however. "I was worried about losing him, but we got him back," Herd Coach Mark Snyder said of Evans, an all-purpose athlete who will play multiple positions, including kick returner, punt returner, running back, slot receiver and quarterback in the racehorse formation. "He's a dynamic player." The other - Brandon Miller, a 6-2, 190-pound safety from Bakersfield (Calif.) Community College - since has opted to attend Conference USA foe Texas-El Paso instead of Marshall. -Another potential mid-year junior college transfer - Travis Ford, a 6-3, 205-pound safety who was Evans' teammate at Laney - made a last-minute switch to sign with Colorado State instead of Marshall in December. Adding insult to injury is the fact that his brother is former Thundering Herd strong safety Aaron Johnson, who played his final season in the fall. -Marshall lost a pair of Mountain State recruits to Coal Bowl rival West Virginia, including one from its own backyard. Cole Bowers, a 6-5, 288-pound offensive lineman from Cabell Midland, reaffirmed his verbal commitment Wednesday when he signed with the Mountaineers. Taige Redman, a 6-2, 215-pound linebacker from Keyser, made a signing-day switch from Ohio to WVU. The Thundering Herd recruited Redman even after he committed to the Bobcats.
