Kaplan: NFL would eat Maurice alive

Maurice Clarett, please get over yourself. We all realize the system is flawed. After all, LeBron can make millions out of high school, while others make millions off of you. However, you can¿t totally disregard the rules and expect to play in the game. The game of college football goes like this: You show up on campus, earn a position, perform at a high level that eventually gets you drafted, make lots of money and live happily ever after. In exchange for the privilege to play on national TV, have a Heisman trophy campaign built around you, and set you up to play in the NFL, you must: go to class occasionally, use available help to pass the class, and not threaten your eligibility with cars and cash. The NFL¿s rules prohibit a player from entering the draft until he is at least three years removed from high school. Clarett needs to understand, if he plans on fighting the league¿s rules with lawyers, he is in for a losing battle financially, and if he spends no time on the football field over the next two seasons, how high of a draft pick will he be? The reality Clarett doesn¿t want to face is that he¿s not ready for the NFL. He will get eaten up in the NFL right now. He had a great freshman year (not without injuries) on the best team in the country. That¿s impressive, but it doesn¿t guarantee NFL success. If Clarett loses his eligibility, he will lose millions of dollars, and being LeBron¿s paid friend for the next two years won¿t be fun Stand up and cheer the NFL for having the guts to shut out kids who have potential, but aren¿t ready to compete against men.

Rosenberg: Time for Clarett to go pro

I don¿t know about you, but one of my all time favorite movies is The Jerk. In this film, Steve Martin goes from rags to riches, only to return to rags. That storyline is not all that different from the Maurice Clarett saga going on right now at Ohio State University. Clarett burst onto the college football scene last year, rushing for nearly 1,300 yards and 16 touchdowns while leading the Buckeyes to a national championship win. It had all the markings of a whirlwind off-season, instead it¿s been a disaster. Clarett has been involved in one fiasco after another. From possible academic improprieties to stolen electronics from someone else¿s car, Clarett has been the poster child for ¿everything that¿s wrong with college sports.¿ You could make a good argument that it's Clarett¿s fault. You could make an equally good argument that it¿s the system ¿ either way, Clarett¿s college career is in jeopardy and it¿s time for Maurice to play on Sundays. The NFL rules do not allow a player to enter the draft until he spends at least three years in college. In my opinion, it¿s a bunch of nonsense. Kids like Maurice Clarett only play college football to ready themselves for the big stage. Assuming the kid is good enough to play, why not let him play now? For all the people that complain about the NBA, the Kobe Bryants, Tracy McGradys and Kevin Garnetts of the world have turned out pretty good. I saw an 18-year-old Dan Blackburn mind the nets at Madison Square Garden and Ken Griffey Jr. exploded onto the Major League Baseball scene as a youngster himself. Is Maurice Clarett ready? I can¿t answer that right now. But could he be any worse than Blair Thomas, Curtis Enis, or Ki-Jana Carter? I don¿t think so!
