Mangino confident probe will clear him

Kansas football coach Mark Mangino expressed confidence Wednesday that a school investigation into his treatment of players will not turn up any problems. "I run this program with a lot of integrity," Mangino told the Kansas City Star without confirming the nature of the probe. "I have been in this conference for nearly 20 years, and what I can tell you is that our coaching intensity is not largely different from the rest of the Big Eight and Big 12 teams I've observed."

Athletic director Lew Perkins authorized an internal review into Mangino's treatment of players and on Monday invited players to discuss anything they have witnessed amid an accusation Mangino poked linebacker Arist Wright in the chest at a recent practice. Lori Williams, hired in September as the school's associate athletic director for risk management, is leading the investigation. She previously worked for the Big 12 and NCAA. "She is a new employee so she goes into this review with no preconceived notions," Associate AD Jim Marchiony told The Daily Kansan. The Star interviewed three former players critical of Mangino's interactions with players, but none accused him of physical confrontations. Mangino spoke after Wednesday's practice but could not be reached for comment later to comment on what they said. Mangino is 50-46 overall and 23-39 in the Big 12 in eight seasons at Kansas. The team has games remaining Saturday at No. 3 Texas and against Missouri. The Jayhawks are 5-5 despite a five-game losing streak and can still qualify for a bowl game with one win. "I'm sitting here in my senior season, two weeks left, and we got a little problem," senior captain Kerry Meier told The Star. "Throughout the whole season, I never really sensed any anger and tension between Coach and players. For somebody to step up and say something, it kind of surprised me." Meier supported Mangino's contention that he has not lost his players, "He's taken this program to new and great heights that I don't think anybody ever imagined," Meier said. "If they're looking to bring somebody in to try and turn this program around again, it's going to be a tough, tough challenge." Marchiony would not speculate on a timetable for completing the investigation.
