O'Neill to transfer

Former Grand Haven High School football standout and four-star University of Michigan recruit Dann O'Neill has announced he will transfer to Western Michigan University . O'Neill, ranked the nation's No. 10 offensive tackle by Rivals and No. 4 by ESPN coming out of Grand Haven in 2008, has been granted his release. He will have three years of eligibility remaining after red shirting his only season in Ann Arbor. "I don't think I fit as well (at Michigan) as I fit with Western Michigan's system," O'Neill told the Kalamazoo Gazette of the Wolverines' new spread offense under coach Rich Rodriguez. "In high school we ran the spread, but we ran a different spread. I'm not sure it was the right offense for me to run. "(WMU is) a better place for me to be, a better place for me to advance my college career." O'Neill, who announced in June he would transfer from Michigan, joins several other former Grand Haven players on the Broncos' roster, including older brother James O'Neill, a junior tight end. Sophomore John Potter and junior Phillip Swanson also hail from Grand Haven. Together, they will try to help Western Michigan top last year's 9-4 record and second-place finish in the Mid-American Conference's West Division. The Broncos open their season Sept. 5 at Michigan, which has lost a number of recent transfers. O'Neill follows Sam McGuffie, Steven Threet and Toney Clemons out of Ann Arbor, and fellow offensive lineman Kurt Wermers decided last week he also would transfer. O'Neill, who did not allow a sack while at Grand Haven and was invited to play in the Under Armour All-American game, verbally committed to Michigan in March 2007, after being recruited by former Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr.
