OU serious about streak

NORMAN - Before the season, the Oklahoma Sooners envisioned they would be playing for a shot at the Big 12 Championship at this point in the year. Maybe even the national championship. With a record of 6-5, both of those goals are shot. But that doesn't mean the Sooners have nothing left to play for Saturday against Oklahoma State. On the line is college football's longest home winning streak. Dating back to a 31-15 win over Tulsa the second game of the 2005 season, OU has reeled off 29 straight victories at Owen Field. And OU's players are dead-set on keeping the streak alive against their Bedlam rival. Especially the seniors. "We're taking a lot of pride in the streak. We talk about it every day, keeping the streak alive," said senior fullback Matt Clapp. "It's the last thing we have now for our season, because we're not going to the Big 12 or a big bowl. "It's the last thing we have and we have to keep it alive." Keeping the streak alive, however, won't be easy. OSU enters the game with a record of 9-2 and is ranked No. 12. The Sooners, meanwhile, are coming off one of the worst defeats in the Bob Stoops era: a 41-13 loss at Texas Tech. But this won't be the first time the streak has faced a challenge. In 2005, the Sooners needed overtime to outlast Baylor, 37-30, then withstood a fourth-quarter comeback by Texas A&M to hold on, 36-30. In 2006, OU trailed Texas Tech 24-10 late in the second quarter. But a pair of Chris Brown touchdowns helped rally the Sooners to a 34-24 win. But the biggest obstacles to the 29-game streak have come in the last two years. In 2007, Missouri came to town undefeated and ranked No. 11 behind an explosive offense. The Tigers led 24-23 in the fourth quarter. But linebacker Curtis Lofton returned a Chase Daniel fumble 12 yards for a touchdown and the Sooners rolled, 41-31. In 2008, another unbeaten, ranked foe traveled to Norman. In a game with national-championship implications, No. 2 Texas Tech was coming off one of the biggest wins in its history after downing top-ranked Texas the week before. But OU put on a dominating performance to rout the Red Raiders, 65-21, on the way to reaching the national title game. Saturday against OSU, the Sooners won't be playing for a chance at a national championship. Nor is a Big 12 title within reach. But upholding the streak is something the Sooners are playing for. And something they don't want to see end. "I participated in a lot of those 29 games," said senior left tackle Trent Williams. "It wasn't one of our major team goals before the season. But we let a lot of our team goals go to the wayside. "So this is something we can hold on to. After this season, we can still say we have that home winning streak." Said senior guard Brian Simmons: "We're excited about it. We want to keep the streak alive. "I hope the streak never ends. But I definitely don't want it to end on my term."
