Report: Mustain thinking about playing baseball

Unable to move up USC's depth chart at quarterback, Mitch Mustain may try a different sport to keep his arm sharp, just as Matt Cassel did five years ago. The junior is considering whether to pitch for the USC baseball team next spring, according to the Los Angeles Daily News. "I've kind of missed baseball," Mustain told the paper. "It's been six years since I played competitively." Mustain set many Arkansas state records as a high school quarterback. Scout.com's No. 1 national recruit in 2006, he signed with Arkansas and started as a true freshman before losing his spot to Casey Dick. He transferred to USC and sat out a redshirt season, then served as a backup to Mark Sanchez last season. He's been third on the depth chart this season behind true freshman Matt Barkley and sophomore Aaron Corp. Mustain now might choose the same course as Cassel, who turned to baseball when he couldn't supplant Carson Palmer or Matt Leinart as USC's starting QB. Cassel played one season of baseball at USC, going 0-1 with 10 strikeouts and four walks in eight games. Cassel then made the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent and shined last season when Tom Brady went down with a knee injury. Cassel signed a six-year, $63 million contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in July.
