SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE NOTEBOOK

The Southeastern Conference deserves credit for publicly admitting that officials blew it when they called an excessive celebration penalty on Georgia receiver A.J. Green last Saturday. But several league coaches would like the league to help examine the NCAA rule because they believe it is too subjective and gives officials too much latitude in deciding what is and isn't excessive. The NCAA mandates a 15-yard penalty be called when a player or players take part in a delayed, excessive, prolonged or choreographed act that focuses attention to themselves or their teammates. That leaves a lot of room for interpretation, and maybe a more specific version should be written, several coaches said. "I think there should be a penalty for taunting. There should be a penalty for hot-dogging," South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said. "When a guy is excessively bringing attention to himself or hot-dogging or trying to taunt an opponent with some kind of act, yes [call a penalty]." UF coach Urban Meyer was upset at the penalty because Green never drew attention to himself after scoring what appeared to be the winning touchdown. He celebrated with his teammates, which is something Meyer encourages his players to do after they score touchdowns. "If you bring attention to yourself, if you don't celebrate with your teammates, if you do something that's obvious, throw the flag," Meyer said. "If it's not, don't you dare throw that flag. " ... The official is put in a tough situation. I'm a little bit like a lot of these coaches, rewrite the thing, take the judgment out of it. I do believe there should be a penalty for excessive celebration or you do something that's not good for college football ." REALLY BIG GAME Struggling to get a handle on the magnitude of Saturday's Florida-LSU game in Baton Rouge? Here's a little help: The winner of the game the past three seasons has gone on to win the BCS national championship. Two top-five AP poll teams have not played each other in Tiger Stadium since Oct. 31, 1959 - the night top-ranked LSU beat third-ranked Ole Miss 7-3 on Billy Cannon's famous run. Florida is still stung by the 28-24 loss in Baton Rouge in 2007, when the Tigers converted five fourth-down attempts and rallied with 14 points in the fourth quarter. LSU is bothered by UF linebacker Brandon Spikes punting the ball into the crowd after scoring on a fourth-quarter interception and the fact that quarterback Tim Tebow was still throwing the ball in the final quarter in UF's 51-21 victory last season. "They were disrespecting us, punting the ball in the stands," LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson said. "We've been holding a grudge and looking forward to this." HOME COOKIN' Mississippi State receiver Leon Berry is taking care of his quarterback - on and off the field. Berry, a junior college transfer who wasn't around for the bowl season in 2007 and last season's struggles, invited quarterback Tyson Lee to his house for a steak dinner. It was another step in Berry's effort to build a good relationship with his teammates. "[Lee] took the first bite and he was like 'Man, Leon, I didn't know you cooked that good,' " Berry said. "I was like 'Yeah, I do a little something.' " On the field, too. Berry has 12 catches for 136 yards and returned a kickoff 89 yards against Georgia Tech. RARE MATCHUP Saturday's Georgia-Tennessee matchup is historically significant because it's the first time in more than 70 years that both teams enter the game unranked in the AP Top 25. The last time that happened was 1937. Tennessee hasn't been ranked all season, but Georgia started the season at No. 13 and dropped to No. 21 after losing to Oklahoma State. The Bulldogs dropped to 23rd the following week despite beating South Carolina and rose to 18th entering last Saturday's game against LSU. A 20-13 loss sent Georgia out of the poll for the first time since the 2006 Chick-fil-A Bowl. "I knew we'd go down [after losing to LSU]," Georgia coach Mark Richt said "I didn't know if we'd go out or not. I'm just glad it's not the final poll."
