TELEVISION BASKETBALL 7 p.m. - Butler at Georgetown ESPN 9 p.m. - Indiana at Pittsburgh ESPN HOCKEY 7 p.m. - NHL, Islanders at Flyers VERSUS Williams up for 'Academic Heisman' today West Virginia senior Reed Williams will learn today whether he's won the "Academic Heisman." The linebacker from Moorefield is one of 16 finalists for the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame's William V. Campbell Trophy. Formerly known as the Draddy Trophy, the Campbell goes to the top student-athlete in college football . Williams is competing against the likes of Florida's Tim Tebow, Texas' Colt McCoy and Minnesota's Eric Decker. He earned an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship and could get another $25,000 scholarship if he wins the trophy. Williams, named the Big East defensive player of the week Monday after recording nine tackles and 2.5 sacks against Rutgers, has a 3.86 GPA. "I told him (Sunday) in front of the team at our meeting, 'This guy right here means so much to me and so much to the school,'" Coach Bill Stewart said. "To see how he's matured as a young man and done what he's done is just a tremendous feeling for me and for his family. I went into his home when not many people thought the kid could play college football . I did and I thought he could play and play well. To have his career end like the way it's ending up now with the honors and the way he's playing, I couldn't be more proud of my son." Mountaineers land linebacker for 2010 class Doug Rigg, a linebacker/running back from New Jersey's Bergen Catholic High, has joined West Virginia's 2010 recruiting class. He's the third likely linebacker in the class, joining Maryland's Troy Gloster and Alabama's John Propst. The 6-foot, 220-pound Rigg wasn't at Saturday's WVU victory against Rutgers, which was among the schools he considered, but did attend the East Carolina game in Morgantown in September on an official visit. He had 65 tackles and seven sacks as a junior for Bergen when he played defensive end and was named first-team all-conference and third-team all-county. Scout.com ranks Rigg No. 59 nationally among outside linebackers. In addition to the Mountaineers and Scarlet Knights, Rigg also considered offers from Iowa, Louisville and Maryland. WVU at No. 6 in poll; four games sold out West Virginia advanced one spot in the Associated Press college basketball poll Monday, moving to No. 6. Coach Bob Huggins' 5-0 club - one of five unbeatens in the Big East Conference - next faces Duquesne (6-2) at the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Pittsburgh. This week's ranking is the highest for the Mountaineers since Feb. 23, 1982, when Coach Gale Catlett's fourth WVU team was No. 6 with a 23-2 record, en route to a 27-4 finish. West Virginia hasn't been higher in the poll since a No. 3 ranking on Dec. 4, 1962 - the first poll of the 1962-63 regular season, in the senior year for star WVU guard Rod Thorn. Huggins' team began the week at No. 2 in the Ratings Percentage Index (behind Duke), with the No. 7 strength of schedule. The Mountaineers were No. 1 last week. WVU also announced Monday that its men's Big East basketball home games against Syracuse (Jan. 16), Louisville (Jan. 30), Villanova (Feb. 8) and Cincinnati (Feb. 27) are sellouts. Tickets for remaining games are on sale at the Mountaineer Ticket Office in the Coliseum. To order, visit wvugame.com or call 1-800-WVU-GAME (1-800-988-4263).
