UNC's Davis preaches patience during inquiry

GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina coach Butch Davis says all the Tar Heels can do is wait for the results of an NCAA investigation into their football program.

Davis provided only limited answers Monday to questions about the inquiry at the ACC preseason media day, saying it was best for the school not to make many comments. The NCAA is looking into whether senior defensive tackle Marvin Austin and senior receiver Greg Little received improper benefits from agents.

Pitino trial: A Kentucky woman lied repeatedly in an attempt to extort millions from Louisville's basketball coach, then traded sexual favors and lied again to cover up her crime, federal prosecutors said at the start of her trial in Louisville, Ky. Assistant U.S. Attorney John Kuhn told jurors that Karen Cunagin Sypher threatened to ruin Rick Pitino's reputation with false allegations of rape and forced abortion. "I submit to you that you will not believe a word she has to say about anything," Kuhn said. Sypher, 50, has pleaded not guilty to extortion, retaliating against a witness and lying to the FBI. A jury of eight men and eight women were selected to hear the case.

Clarett back at Ohio State: Ohio State University says former football star Maurice Clarett has been granted re-entry to pursue his degree after he spent more than three years in prison. Clarett, who started classes Monday, led the Buckeyes to the 2002 national championship in his only college season. He pleaded guilty in 2006 to aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon, and served 3½ years in a Toledo prison, where he took college credit courses.
