GAME OF THE YEAR: Wake Forest 24, Stanford 17 -- The Demon Deacons rallied from a 17-3 halftime deficit, with QB Riley Skinner completing 13-of-17 second-half passes. His one-yard touchdown run with two seconds remaining provided the go-ahead points and gave the Demon Deacons 251 rushing yards in the game. It turned out to be the highlight among close games, because the Demon Deacons lost twice in overtime, two other games by three points and another game by one point.

PLAYERS OF THE YEAR:

QB Riley Skinner -- He ranks as the winningest quarterback in school history and he went out with a bang by passing for a career-high 372 yards and a school-record five touchdowns in the finale at Duke. The 3,160 passing yards and 26 touchdown passes set single-season school records. He did that by completing 264-of-400 passes.

DT John Russell -- He was a captain for the final game and his presence in the middle of the defensive line gave the Demon Deacons stability there. He had at least one tackle for a loss in seven games this season.

FAST FORWARD: The defense might have to become the team's strength after a year of maturing. The good thing is that the Demon Deacons put plenty of players in critical roles during 2009 and the coaches learned who might be best suited for key roles in the future on defense. The offense with have tailbacks Josh Adams and Brandon Pendergrass and fullback Tommy Bohanon back, and a good collection of receivers. Riley Skinner won't be around to throw them the ball, and the early quarterback competition is going to come down to Ted Stachitas, who didn't do anything to make his way onto the field in a reserve role in 2009, and Brendan Cross, who sat out a redshirt season. It won't be easy for the Demon Deacons to work their way back to a bowl, but that should be the goal after missing out following a three-year bowl run.

RECRUITING TRAIL: The Demon Deacons are back in Florida looking for more talent that meets their specifications. Wake Forest often falls short of impressing recruiting analysts, but that doesn't bother this staff much. The Demon Deacons are continuing to restock their offensive line and they have a couple of verbal commitments from tight ends, which has been another position of priority.
