With one week to go, BCS questions still remain

With one week remaining before the participants are selected for the BCS title game, the most plausible scenario remains the same as it's been since the first version of the standings was released back in October. If Texas wins the Big 12 title game, it will play the winner of the Florida-Alabama showdown in the SEC title game. But not everything surrounding the five BCS bowls is quite so clear cut. In fact, two big questions remain to be answered even with just one week left in the regular season:

  • Will Boise State be able to join fellow BCS-buster TCU in one of the five BCS bowls? The Broncos continue to hold down the No. 6 spot in the standings and need only to beat a 3-9 New Mexico State to complete a perfect regular season. Oklahoma State's loss to Oklahoma, which knocked the Cowboys out of the top 14, certainly seems to help the Broncos, eliminating one of the most likely contenders for an at-large bid. But other potential spoilers are lurking. Should Nebraska upset Texas in the Big 12 title game, the Longhorns would undoubtedly earn one of the at-large bids. With TCU and the Florida-Alabama loser already assured a spot in one of the BCS bowls, that would leave Big Ten runner-ups Iowa and Penn State battling Boise State for the final spot. Likewise, if Pittsburgh beats Cincinnati in the regular-season finale for both teams, the Panthers would claim a share of the Big East title and the conference's automatic BCS berth (by virtue of their head-to-head win over the Bearcats). A one-loss Cincy team would still be in the top 14 and could be a more appealing at-large option.
  • Who'll play for the national title if Texas loses? Based on today's standings, this appears to be a three-team race among TCU, Cincinnati and the loser of the SEC title game. The Horned Frogs are fourth, but a win over Pittsburgh (currently No. 15 in the BCS standings) might be enough to push Cincinnati ahead of TCU. TCU (.8689) and Cincinnati (.8547) are virtually tied in the standings. The Horned Frogs are ahead of the Bearcats in the two polls, but Cincinnati has a stronger computer rating. The wild card is whether a close loss in the SEC title game would be enough to drop either Florida or Alabama out of the top two — particularly the Gators, who currently own a .118 lead over TCU in the standings.
