Italian cyclist Ricco gets appeal date at CAS

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP)

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has given Italian cyclist Riccardo Ricco a hearing next month to appeal his 12-year ban for a doping offense.

Ricco is challenging an Italian Olympic committee tribunal verdict from April that ruled he used transfusions of his own blood. He will have a hearing on Dec. 11.

The 29-year-old rider previously served a 20-month ban for using the blood-booster CERA when winning two mountain stages at the 2008 Tour de France.

Ricco hasn't ridden competitively since being treated in a hospital in February 2011 after reportedly attempting to transfuse blood at his home. The Vacansoleil-DCM team fired him after the incident.

Ricco was the runner-up in the 2008 Giro d'Italia, finishing behind Alberto Contador.
