Verlander to play at Pebble Beach

On the weekend before spring training begins for pitchers, Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers will be focused on a different type of swing.
Verlander, the 2011 Cy Young and American League MVP winner, has accepted an invitation to play in the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament, scheduled for Feb. 7-10 on the popular, picturesque course in California.
The tournament sent a message to Verlander Thursday on Twitter that read: "We are excited for you to join us for the 2013 tournament!!"
Verlander, whose celebrity status continues to grow (Kate Upton, now this ...), tweeted back, "Can't wait!"
Based on his approach to baseball's All-Star Game — you want 100 mph fastballs, you got them — is there any doubt that Verlander will bring a "Drive for Show" mentality to the golf course?
Other celebrities who have committed include actors Bill Murray and Ray Romano, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and retired tennis pro Andy Roddick.
San Francisco Giants pitcher Matt Cain, who threw a perfect game last season, is the only other baseball player currently in the field.
Last year's Pebble Beach champ Phil Mickelson will try to defend his title, while Tiger Woods is not expected to play.
As for Verlander ... just Let 'er Rip, JV.
