White, who plays the point on the power play, was injured during the third period of Tuesday night's 2-1 loss to Dallas when he was struck by the skate blade of Wings goalie Jimmy Howard.
(If you watch the video above, at the 1:02 mark, White is trailing the play and eventually slides through the crease on one knee after Howard's save. The 1:12 mark provides a better angle.)
"He had surgery this morning," general manager Ken Holland said Wednesday. "Some muscle had to be reattached."
The Wings (1-2) were already without three other defensemen — Jonathan Ericsson (hip), Jakub Kindl (groin) and Carlo Colaiacovo (shoulder) — for their home opener.
After finding out that Colaiacovo might miss up to a month, the club signed free agent Kent Huskins to a one-year contract Tuesday to try to help bolster the depleted defensive corps. Hours later, Huskins was in the lineup.
Holland, however, said he won't have to make another roster move at this time. Kindl is likely to be back in the lineup for Friday's game against Minnesota at Joe Louis Arena.
